Check https://www.puruipolishing.com/product/10-inch-rock-hard-felt-wheel/

The wheel they offer seems to be the wheel Vadim (RIP) of Knife Grinders offered. Payment/shipment was absolutely not problematic.

Good luck

Knife Sharpening / Re: How sharp is sharp enough?

You must get a BESS value under 100 to be sure that you removed the root of the burr. Vadim Kraichuk (RIP) explains this in his booklet "Knife deburring". Diamond or CBN wheels in combination with a felt wheel of the right density are the solution.

Some days ago I received a felt wheel with the following data from China:

10 Inch Rock Hard Felt Wheel for Knife Sharpening
Material: 100% Australia wool
Color: Natural white
Diameter: 250MM
Thickness: 45MM
Arbor hole: 12MM
Density: 0.65g/cm³
sales@puruipolishing.com

Contact person is Alan Chang.

This felt wheel looks and behaves identical to the felt wheel I got from Knifegrinders. Same diameter, same weight. Price was 100 US$ including the shipment to Germany. I received it about three weeks after I placed the order.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

You can use the FVB of Schleifjunkies together with the Calcapp calculator. The advantage of Calcapp is that it is "machine independant". The result simply is the distance between the top of the USB and the wheel surface.

The reason that there are no more supplies from Knifeginders is the our friend Vadim sadly passed away in January.

Calcapp is the right app to calulate the right height of the USB. There is no difference if you sharpen or if you hone. Only the wheel diameter and probably the angle are different.

Hello Darita, before buying more hardware I would suggest to read the booklet "Knife Deburring: Science behind the lasting razor edge" written by Dr. Vadim Kaichuk (RIP) known in our forum as "wootz" and watch his videos on YouTube.

BESS is a unit defined by the force (weight) you need to cut a special thin polycarbonate filament with your knife. The smaller the BESS value is the sharper is your knife. There is a table showing a comparisons between BESS values and common descriptions:

For me it seems to be the problem of the wire edge burr. Vadim (RIP) explained it in his booklet and on YouTube:

Knife Sharpening / Re: Finding knife angle
October 24, 2021, 09:48:45 PM
I started using laser goniometer with the DIY version DILAGON 2.0 described by Cyrano in http://bessex.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=338&page=2. Very easy to build as you don't need a curved screen. The angle scale is calculated for a flat area. To hold the small laser I used a pipe clamp. Cost is less than 10 $.
