Thanks Drilon. Just a query, what angle on the felt wheel?

17,5 degrees for the Victorinox knives.

Of course 90 gcm^-3

With the following protocol I get 2-digit BESS readings with my Victorinox (Swibo) knives:

Setting the edge 15 degrees/side on CBN 1000.
Honing on Tormek leather wheel loaded with 5 µm diamond paste at 15 degrees/side.
Three passes each side on the rock hard felt (density 0,65 g/cm³
    wheel loaded with monocrystallin 1 µm diamonds.
Final pass on chromium oxide bonded with linseed oil varnish on the leather wheel.

Typical readings 60 to 80 BESS.

When I started this protocol I used a felt wheel with 90 gcm^-1. Never reached <120 BESS.

With the paper wheels I got results with very high variation in BESS values.

All these steps I learned from Vadim (RIP).

Hello Jeff, the booklet "Knife deburring" of Dr. Vadim Kraichuk (RIP) helps a lot to understand what's happening when you sharpen a knife. You can get it at Amazon.

Your BESS readings are very good in my opinion. The reason to reach under 100 BESS is, that it indicates the the root of the burr had been removed and you get a long lasting sharpness.

The power consumption is rated 200 W.

I got the diamond powder from China via aliexpress.com. In Germany it's de.aliexpress.com.

The price for 100 Karat = 20 gramms ist around 9 Euro/US$. It will last for years! The delivery time to Germany was around 20 days. But google in your country for diamond (polishing) powder. May be there is a local source.

In China the sizes are classified in W-numbers. See the list attached.

Good sprays you find in the drugstores.

Ells, I had this effect also. The reason was that I sprayed far too much diamond particles on the felt. After some time (about 10 knives) the dust disappeared.

I made my own spray, purchased diamond powder and mixed it with ethanol. Before spraying it you must shake it very well as this mixture settles very fast (wootz mentioned it clearly).
