Knife Sharpening / Titanium Cutting Boards
September 28, 2024, 08:43:57 PM
Hello friends,

lately I've been seeing more and more advertisements for titanium cutting boards. They are easy to clean, antibacterial and do not damage the cutting edge because titanium is softer than steel.

I have my doubts about that. My search in the forum has not got me any further. Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences with these titanium chopping boards?

Greetings from Germany

Knife Sharpening / Re: Wierd shape of blade

Hi Skärparn,
do you sharpen by moving the knife back and forth? It seems to be the problem of the middle overgrinding.

Always sharpen from the handle to the tip.

Knife Sharpening / Re: New angle jig KS-123

Is it really so important that the angle is very precise? I think it is important to get the same angle from grinding to grinding to avoid unnecessary material waist. For the use of the knife it makes no difference if the angle is 14, 15 or 16 degrees.

Do you always sharpen in one direction from the heel to the tip or do you sharpen back and forth? Sharpening in two directions would over-grind the middle part of the knife.

There is a post by "tomerus" on October 10, 2017 with very helpful comments. It's worth reading, even though it's not specific to T1.

I purchased one felt wheel in December 2022 and one in March 2023. Price was US$ 75 plus US$ 25 air shipping plus import duties. The wheels arrived two or three weeks after prepayment.

Only use solutions of diamonds in alcohol as water based solutions will change the properties of the felt.

I like these wheels and I get good results!

Again.

In YouTube " Demonstrating Tormek's Centering Knife Jigs KJ-45 & KJ-140 | Part 16 " at 5:50 min. the reason for unequal bevels is explained very good.

Hello Merlin,
for a start I would watch in YouTube "Common Tormek mistakes in knife sharpening" by Knife Grinders Australia and the "Tormek Live Sharpening Classes".

Have fun!

There is a description in the forum explaining the problem with the SVM jigs:
https://forum.tormek.com/index.php?topic=2962.0

My SVM-45 jigs have an offset of 1,25 mm, ideal for knives of 2,5 mm thickness at the clamping area.

The buffer Vadim (RIP) uses in his YouTube video "Our new setup for Commercial Sharpening - 22 knives per hour" is a Bernardo DS200S with 2850 rpm.

Quote from: RickKrung on May 16, 2023, 03:53:38 PMHave you searched the forum for previous discussions on microscopes.  There has been a fair bit of discussion.  Also, on the BESS Exchange.

I've tried quite a variety, up to one USB unit costing $1200.  The best, most versatile, most informative and cheapest has been the Kingmas 60X hand microscope.  Do a search on "Kingmas" to read posts on this question from many forum users. I have three or four of these around my shop and use it for any number of task.  It is also the only magnifier for getting out extremely tiny slivers.

I also use a tiny microscope like yours to check the edge. Perfect for this job!
