  Good to hear from you and that you are doing well! Thanks for inquiring. I'm doing well. Have been staying busy with other things such as gardening, etc. Haven't used the Tormek for quite sometime. Have done a fair amount of chainsaw chain sharpening but that has slackened  off since my son got out of the tree service buisness.

As the warning stated in the Henry Ford Trade School book, shown by Tubalcain (aka Mr. Pete), techniques and things used in these older books were from a different time than ours. The practice of safety was not necessarily as prominent (hopefully, maybe?) as it is now. Some things practiced then could be hazardous.

That being said, I still contains "some" excellent information.

Yes, this is the Tormek Forum and more particularly the Drill Bit Sharpening segment of it. I imagine that the majority of those reading this segment, however, own or have access to a drill press.

I have found the vintage booklet "The Drill Press - It Use and Application" produced by Walker Turner, to be excellent information. It does contain a nice section about drill bits.

I really like his videos, they are well done.

I am going to post a link to one that I found to be excellent. Ken, it does mention another brand of sharpener and opens with a picture of it, so if you need to give this the axe...... However, that is not the point of the video and it does not push that unit.

It mentions a few reference books in it, some of which were available as downloads. I downloaded 3 of them in pdf format for a whopping cost of $0.00usd.

I made the height to be adjustable. Don't remember the height that I used the most. A link to the thread that covered that is below.

For extremely damaged bits, I have used an abrasive cutoff wheel as the first step. By the way those came from an auction in that condition. I try not to abuse my bits like that. I kind of enjoy free handing bits.

May I suggest grinding your bits on your bench grinder or belt sander  prior to putting them on the Tormek? I have done them free handed for years. This would take care of the "damage" much more quickly. Jan's  drill jig would allow one to have more precision with hand grinding if one is not comfortable with true free hand grinding.

Remember light pressure on the diamond wheel. I found that issue out first hand on DMT diamond stones quite a few years ago.

Various methods can be used.

   Do you have a belt sander or a buddy with one? The "slack"  portion can put a convex shape  on your axe then as stated above the edge can be done by other means.

   Here is a link to a PDF download of "An Ax To Grind" by Bernie Weisgerber and developed by the USDA Forest Service. I have found it to very informative and helpful. The discussion of sharpening begins on about page  27 of the booklet.

Yes, there is. Jan, no longer on the forum, made one. As I recall, he was able to accomplish a four facet point. See the following links.

Notice that Jan said that with careful work the four facet could be accomplished. I am sure that the DBS-22 makes it more accurately and easily done.

The use of the square as shown, isn't it being assumed that the USB is perpendicular to the side of the grinding wheel?
