Hi team!

I've been deep into 3D rabbit hole, now I want to come back to sharpening hobby (with some new tools).
It would be amazingly helpful to have a official CAD from Tormek. It might be a long shot to ask for it, but I was trained to always check "if door is locked, before attempting to break it". So the easy path first - I am looking for the external dimensions. I guess, such information can't be used for anything harmful for the Tormek as a company. Or at least, I can't imagine anything harmful.

Sergei, if you go down this path, look hard at Fusion 360.  It is a great tool for 3D modeling, and I understand there is a licensing which is free for non-commercial users.  Some of the other 3D CAD programs I've tried don't make smooth curves and that can be problematic for some parts you would want to make.

Fusion 360 can output to a 3D printer directly, but I prefer to output the file in STL format, and then use a separate slicer tool.  I use Ultimaker's Cura for that.  It is a free tool.

As for 3D printers, the  Creality Ender is a good product at a good price.  There are other better and faster printers, but the Creality Ender seems to be a good starting printer (I have the Ender 3 v2).  You can print using both PLA and ABS filament which covers most use cases.

I went that path...


11 month and several printers later. I do know how to model and print now Mods incoming. But first I need to check if there is a CAD for the Tormek. I will post in a different topic.

Speaking of angles. In the calc it gives a single value of "T USB" (tangent distance to stone surface from the support) for both front USB, regular USB and horizontal USB.
Logically, it should be the same, no matter what type of support is used. But I just want to double-check, if I am missing something.

Speaking of rust: I sharpened a pair of scissors on 1200 grit CBN, and in several minutes it got covered in orange spots. My first thought was, "wow, that was quick". But, it seems the rust is coming from carbon steel from scissors.

Second part - the ancient wisdom of unclogging diamonds from WickedEdge: Ultrasonic cleaner. If it is any similar, ultrasonic would remove the embedded metal in seconds.

I am leaning to the water direction. It will be cleaner and a bit cooler. They don't expressly say that warranty is voided in the water. However, the warrant statement does strategically enumerate things they cover. And the rust is not in the list. I guess, it's worth a try to see how fast and how bad it will rust. It won't get damaged beyond usable state right away.

I guess the rust concern is coming from enormous surface area of the diamond/cbn coated plate. That would hold on to some amount of water. On other hand, it will be evaporating from the equally large area. I will keep an eye on the rust.

PS: The water trough doesn't fit between the wheel and the case. It seems I need a shim of some sort to make it fit.

I just got a couple wheels from Woodturners. 600 and 1200 grit. And I have 200 grit in route. Well... It's not exactly what I expected.
Woosh! And 0.5mm of steel disappeared from 600 grit in like 3 passes. I guess, the wheel needs break-in and I need to learn lighter touch.
It's a first time I use diaminds/CBN wheel with Tormek. I remember the break-in from Wicked Edge.

I am bit worried about the 200 grit I ordered. I can't imagine what to feed it for the initial break-in. How long will it be that steel-hungry?

I got my quote back. It looks like it won't be a big savings item.

Correction - it's in alcohol. It seems to be the best option for now.

here is the best solution I had found for making consistent readings.  The depth gauge foot with the angled end spaces the measurement point far away enough from the slope of the case close to the vertical support boss and the top Micro-Adjust nut maintains the calipers parallel to the USB bar.

Yup. It's not the measurement photo. I just wanted to remember where it was measured and I was lazy to write it down. So I measured an take a picture in general vicinity.

It looks like, I found what was introducing the error into Calc. With measured numbers, the angle matches.
I also tried the Bosch GM220 trick for the USB height setting. It's precise, but it takes time to set the angle on that thing. How lovely would it be if Tormek engraved the ruler onto smooth USB leg.

Cool! I sent them a quote request couple hours ago. How much do they change for 480ml?
...speaking of which, half-liter is way too much for a single user. If they sell it to me, I will gladly re-package and sell it in smaller bottles

I am trying to find a good source for the alcohol-based diamond spray for the felt wheel. mr. Vadim was not specific about the reason why "water based diamond spray should not be used on the felt wheel". I can guess, the water does something to felt... But logically it doesn't compute. The amount of water is miniscule. Yes, it will dry out bit slower than alcohol, but it will dry out and it will be the same result in the end.

Anyway. I see a whole bunch of Jende sprays. For $18.50/7ml and I guess it's water-based. Schleifjunkies have 100ml bottles for ~40EUR and 45EUR shipping. Again, it seems to be in water. Some "Gunny Juice" is for $20/10ml bottles. Water based.

I don't have any other ideas. Googling it more.
