Thank you for sharing your knowledge. When I discovered the pleasure of sharpening by hand I tried to stick with it. Using my hands gives me pleasure, balancing the pressure with my fingers, trying to maintain the angle etc. makes me relax so I'm that woodworker that loves sharpening. since I've started sharpening by hand my ability of paring with precision improved noticably. Using the Tormek but, is something that I couldn't avoid. Newer steels, as Maguire says, are very hard to regrind by hand, it takes ages and makes me sweat. Till now I had to use a hand crank grinder cause I cannot make noise. The Tormek has been a great improvement but I will never stop training free-hand sharpening.
