Knife Sharpening / Re: Knife Jig Prototype

Ken,first off I don't yet own a Tormek grinder. I do most of my sharpening on an Axminster Ultimate Edge Belt Grinder, that is able to use most, if not all of the Tormek Jigs. I have a hand knife sharpening jig but wanted something to use on the belt grinder. I wanted to buy the older style Tormek jig but it no longer seems available new. Having the tools I decided to make my own jig. There are literally dozens of hand sharpening jigs that utilise "self Centering" clamps. My jig is just another one of those, but designed to be used on any machine with a 12mm support bar like the Tormek or in my case Axminster Ultimate Edge. The self centering clamp is not perfect but it seems a very common design so I thought it would make a good starting point.

The jig itself is made in several parts. There are two alloy clamp plates attached to which is a 10mm diameter stainless steel bar. Longer or shorter bars could easily be attached if required.

I'm currently in the workshop making another part. I'll post another picture if it works out ok.

I have some other ideas for a truly self Centering jig that could accommodate a wide range of blade thicknesses but I'm not sure if/or how easily it could be made. Something for the future perhaps?

Knife Sharpening / Knife Jig Prototype

I've nearly finished this prototype knife jig. I've not had chance to use it yet. I fitted the construction in whilst waiting for materials for a more pressing job.

Knife Sharpening / Re: SVM 45 Dimensions

Thanks for that. I just wanted a rough starting point. With the design I have in mind the shaft will be a seperate screw in item so length could be altered easily at the expense of new material.

Knife Sharpening / SVM 45 Dimensions

Can anyone confirm the dimensions of the SVM 45? Not critical but I've tried to scale a screenshot. It's just to give me an idea of the general size to aim for a custom jig I have in mind.

Agreed. I only need the centre part shown in the photo. As a result I should be able to make it much more compact.

Got lot of ideas on internet, it is adjustable for long and mid size knifes. Any sugestiones?

An old thread I know but that looks good. I'm looking to make a single clamp jig and may make something similar. Thanks for posting the picture.

Knife Sharpening / DIY Self Centering Knife Jig

I'm sure I saw a thread on this with lots of pictures on here some years ago. I can't seem to find it now though. Was I imagining it or was it somewhere else?

General Tormek Questions / Re: Speed Increase

Quote from: RickKrung on April 25, 2025, 05:03:30 PMWhy in the world would anyone use any wheel dry on a Tormek?

There seem to be a number of professional knife sharpeners on YouTube that do.

I'm a big fan of ER collet chucks, I have used them on quite a few projects as well as on my lathes and mill. There are a lot of different sizes available on eBay for very reasonable prices.

I know this topic has come up before but I just saw this video. I also noticed in another that some are buying CBN wheels and using them dry.

General Tormek Questions / AX-40 Axe Jig
April 21, 2025, 02:56:24 PM
I'm in need of an Axe jig and to say I was singularly unimpressed with the old version is an understatement. The New Tormek AX-40 though looks very impressive from the videos I've seen. I'll be ordering one soon. Anyone on here used one?
