Knife Sharpening / Re: a different measuring block

Ken,

When you standardize aren't you always assuming that the diameter of the wheel remains constant?

I'd been looking for a stool and had a nifty little email exchange with Wootz about different stools last week. He directed me to this thread and gave me dimensions for wooden ones in the email as well. Now this thread gets an update with new leads and suggestions...My T8 arrives today from Advanced Machinery and with the Amazon lead I should have the workstation up and running by the end of the week...I swear, if you just keep an eye on the forums "All Will Be Revealed"!

I've also posted about using woodworking marking gauges, setting the distances using calipers, but using the marking gauge to transfer those settings to the knife jigs or USB positions.

Below is a huge dump of information on the calipers and marking gauges I use for sharpening.  Sorry, it is quite long, so I'll sign off before.

Rick

Rick et al,

Ken has always encouraged me to post questions and search whenever possible. I sincerely do appreciate the time and oft duplicated patient answers that many people, yourself included provide for members new to the Tormek systems. I'll try not to take that for granted.

... If you get any caliper, make sure it operates in metric units (as well as imperial).  Most have a button that switch between units.

Carry on and keep us informed of your progress and questions.

Rick

Rick, thanks for that input. I'd simply ask what length/size caliper is going to cover the vast majority of FVB sharpening applications and measurements? Given that the 250mm wheel diam. Is part of the FVB equation I have to assume one with that minimum range.

Good post, Rick.

Ken

Ken, Rick, I do agree, plenty of time to research for the necessary FVB gear while I get the feel of a basic setup. The basic setup is  a T8, the SVM-45, a rotating base, and okay one splurge the SJ-250! :)  oh yeah and like two Irwin chisels! Lol

John, I agree.

I happen to have both models of the TT-50. I will keep the 2019 version in my ready access drawer, however, I would be just as happy with the older model. I don't presently have electrical ties on my older TT-50. If a notice a problem, I would install them.
Anyone purchasing a new TT-50 now should insist on getting the 2019 model. (Beware, most of the online photos show the older model.) I would suggest anyone happily using the older version continue with it. If you notice any chatter, it's your call. The new TT-50 costs $93 US. A pack of electrical ties costs less than $5.

Ken

Ken, Whats been your experience with the 2019 version of the TT-50? Has the chattering been eliminated or perhaps persisted but to a much lesser degree? Has the redesign eliminated the need for the zip ties as used by Wootz?

Good New.

I have printed edition, but is important to me to have one digital edition for a couple of reasons:

I can take it everywhere.
it's easy for me to translate the part that I don't understand well.

Purchased!!!

I´m not sure if this expression is so correct in english, but for me, this book is and absolute "bedside book" of grinders  :D :D

Lol, I just got my hard copy for my bedside table...I love the bound format as I'm a bit old school when it comes to "study and learning" A great resource, and man the depth of knowledge it contains. With regards to an earlier question posed, I would ask Ken S. if he ever go an answer about determining a blade's composition.

Ken, Josu...inestimable help and advice, You guys probably just saved me some serious change, and totally refocused my approach even though I have FVB on the way. I would ask one question regarding the use of the FVB, I'd be interested in hearing a recommendation for a vernier depth caliper to be used with the FVB when I become proficient enough with the basic system. Thanks in advance.

Knife Sharpening / Re: FVB Order with KnifeGrinders
January 12, 2020, 08:34:45 PM
Indeed Ken, that's why I mentioned "all that been going on in Oz" relative to the Strops. 'Roo hunting is regulated, requires a licensed hunter for commercial purposes. Depending on where KG's guy hunts It wouldn't surprise me if they have to evaluate the impact on local wildlife populations before they reissue new permits. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if I get a notice that my strop is backordered. Geo.

One of the better sharpeners I've read here on the forum (his board name eludes me at the moment) has a video of exactly this process pic on his YouTube Channel,  Sharpco Knives

https://youtu.be/kO1dyGxa3Rg

I was also intrigued by one of his replies to a question on that video about the success he had using the pastes. You might want to read the comments as well.

Ken!

I see we continue to share similar experiences...lol.  My order was for a Kanga Tail strop as well!  Figured there could be a delay in restocking those with all that's been going on in Oz. Ordered an FCB as well. Been exchanging emails with Wolfgang this past week. Xmas is a bit late but I finally have time.

When I see the care and attention paid to each of his custom products (per the aforesaid YT video. I feel its worth the wait. Place an order about a week back, got an acknowledging email from them, not necessarily referencing the order itself but at least a reply. Just realized that I need a few more items I might as well place the order so it can be shipped out together.

Hello George,

because the online shop in my opinion was not really helpful or accommodating, I have (justified for me) made 1 point Google rating.
At the first very detailed review I have described the respective point deduction and would have come to minus 5 points rating. The next morning, the lawyer threatened me. Because I also had parts of the email traffic in the review I deleted them.

Afterwards I only mentioned the very long 14 and 24 working days delivery time, although according to order 3 to 5 days were specified. Also, the defective delivered machine had to be sent at my expense for repair. The next morning, the lawyer was again threatened.

Thereupon I deleted all text of the 1 point review. The answer from the online shop was: "You will receive a reminder from our lawyer in the next 14 days. We will delete the Google rating directly from our lawyer at Google. The costs for this will be invoiced separately. We are also examining the extent to which we can still bill you for the costs of the graceful repair. Talks have already been held with all those involved. "

;D Now a week has passed and I'm curious. The 1 point rating has not been canceled yet  ;D

Best regards
Thomas

and it wont be Thomas...

Hi Ken. Yes I absolutely agree with you. In cases such as Thomas' complaining is about all one can do as well as post an accurate truthful online review when an eVendor is involved.  As to his treatment at the hands of this particular eVendor which now that I've seen his most recent post, I find it worse than shabby, in fact the word coercion comes to mind. I agree with you again, Tormek should be informed.

I would point out that their threats of Attorney action are absolute BS under the proviso that the review was factual; a lousy review does not constitute slander. It simply reinforces to me that this particular vendor is petrified of a bad review not to mention doing Tormek themselves a huge disservice. Another reason Tormek should be informed.

I understand that the Translator may not have been exactly precise but really, "our attorney at Google?" that's some seriously ugly stone plugging swarf. As to being threatened of being billed by the eVendor for the repair the German dealership provided free of charge...I wouldn't just write Tormek I'd call them.

Full and unmitigated apologies to the Tormek Forum Community if I'm being too passionate in my response. Ken please, if this post is deemed to be inappropriate I will fully understand any action you choose to take as forum admin. Thomas I am thoroughly glad the dealership in Germany took care of you.

The statement was: "Your above shipment was damaged during transport - we are very sorry. However, we can not refund the damage you have suffered...as the postal company of the country of destination informed us, the packaging was not sufficient to protect the contents safely. According to our general terms and conditions, however, consignment contents must be packed in such a way that damage during transport is excluded. In this case, we can not assume any liability. "

The online retailer then recommended that I file a complaint with the shipping company. Since I'm not a contractor with the shipping company, can (according to my research) only the online retailer to appeal.

After further, for me unsuccessful, mail traffic I had to send the machine on own costs to the sales Germany. The repair (replacement of the engine cover) in the distribution was on goodwill.
Many thanks to the helpfulness of the sales company Germany and to the Tormek support.

Check your parcels on delivery very accurately !!!
And even better, who can should spend more money at the local dealer rather than ordering at the cheapest online shop.

Best regards
Thomas

Terribly sorry to hear that Thomas. You'll note that I bolded the portion of your post where DHL stated that the (Austrian?) postal service had made a determination that the packaging was insufficient to protect the contents. That is the fault of the vendor.

I understand you've more or less resolved the issue but I feel that if available to you a review of the vendor is warranted (we here in the states have "Yelp" however I'm not sure if they are international or not)...I would state exactly what transpired: that an official  determination was made that the vendor's packaging was insufficient to protect the delivery of a costly piece of equipment. I realize some people might find that "shutting the barn door after the horse is out" (I'd love to see how Google Translate handles that American expression! Lol!) but the fact is you may keep other people from suffering the same consequences or, even better, though I suspect unlikely, cause the vendor to change their shipping practices and policies. She (I presume) was absolutely off the mark that the fault lay with the shipper, the fault lay with them, the vendor. I'm sorry they didn't own up to that fact.

Best wishes,
George
