General Tormek Questions / Re: TT-50 on SJ-250?

Hi,
I use the TT-50 the same way as I use it on a standard stone. You still use the microadjustment and can be carefull how much to remove.

Yes, you can use it.

Hi,
I got 2 new EKA tactical knifes with Tanto blades to learn how to sharpen this kind of knives and after trying both SVS-50 and SE-76 I figured out that on these specific knifes, the blade is to short to get the right protrusion so I ended up using the SVM-45 knife jig.
First I sharpened the smaller edge/tanto edge at both sides and clamped the jig parallel to the edge and close to the edge.
Then I sharpened the blade edge and got a perfect result after trying it 2 times. I was paying attention so I got the meeting point at the edges to get really good and I I got it 100% correct.
So, You can sharpen it with the SVM-45 but you need to clamp it twice and check the angle twice.
However, there are some Tanto knifes on the market with slightly curved edges and I have not tried sharpening those but I cant see no reason that there will be a problem with getting a good result on them as well.

Knife Sharpening / Re: just watched jeff on youtube
November 21, 2014, 09:00:59 AM
One easy way of finding burr is to use a cotton ball gliding on the edge, if there is burr there will be cotton.
But Herman, you are right, some brands are using really hard metal and that gives less burr. Really cheap knifes leaves a long burr that you hardly can hone away.
At the same time, some knifes needs a short burr, some butchers like that.
I often let the knife run over my thum nail, then I feel the burr directly. I do not recommend doing that to often though  ;)
I do believe that we can be slightly too obsessed by this, many new knives does have a little burr left on them from the factory, even expensive brands. I came home with some Japanese knifes and after 5 days my wife found them dull. Now, she is spoiled by now so I had to check them, but after some honing they were as sharp as they were intended to be. At the same time, when you know how sharp you can get them on the Tormek, I find it nice to always have sharp knifes at home. I also find it relaxing to sharpen and with the result, it makes me happy  ;D

Hi,
I am meeting a guy next week who sells those knifes. I will get back to you with a suggestion on how to do it, I've done it some time ago and I know I used 2 jigs but not witch two :-)
Tanto knives has different angles out from the knife-blade and can be tricky. Using SVS-50 will need the blade to rest on its bevel and I would not do that.
Next Friday I will know!

Have a nice weekend!

Knife Sharpening / Re: just watched jeff on youtube

I would say that everybody can get their knives sharp on a Tormek. I have met many users saying they have problems doing it but they don't sharpen enough so they can feel the burr with the fingertips. When that is done, sharpen next side and hone with or without the jig as described in the handbook.

General Tormek Questions / Re: Hot motor

No need for worries, it is normal that it gets around 50 degree Celsius, about 122 Fahrenheit.
Even some degrees up is no problem.

On the Warranty card that follows the machine it´s written : Valid together with the purchase receipt.
So if you buy a used machine, get the purchase receipt and the warranty follows the machine.

As I wrote earlier, patience and WD-40/5-556 works but can take some days.
I would try to save the stone as well as it´s many years of use left in it. I have never used Liquid Wrench and can´t say if it works. I´m a bit concerned that it can affect the bushing in some way.

Hi,
dont use force!
Put some WD-40/5-56 on both sides, let in work over night. Give the shaft a light knock with a plastic hammer. Put more WD-40/5-56 on and do the same thing over again. It will work after a couple times. If its bad it can take some days, but normally it works over night.
Patience is the key :-)

Hi Terry,
It is meant to be like that.

Gregg,
Dismantle the stone and check if the bushings are correct on both side, look for cracks or uneven wear.
Also, make a mark on the lowest point of the stone and true it again. If it appears at the same time over and over again there might be something with the stone.

You did not write if you sharpen knifes with or against the stones rotation, that would also be helpful.
Shapening with the stones direction does need more training. It´s normal that the stone wear´s more when you are new using the system. After a while the right technique gets better and the wear of the stone gets better.
Sharpening against the rotation makes it easier to hold the blade flat on the stone, using the water as a guide. Even makes it faster and less burr to hone.
I will again point out that using support@tormek.com will make any answer faster to get an reply on.

Best,
Stig
