Thanks for the advise Ken. The wheel on the T8 is so easy to take off, think I'll just make a habit of taking it out of my unheated shop during those cold Vermont nights. I assume the rest of the machine is OK to stay out...right?

Good to know.
Not going to risk it and will be bringing the stone into heated area during the winter.
Thanks,

Hand Tool Woodworking / Winter is coming
September 21, 2021, 01:10:18 AM
With winter approaching here in Vermont, I've been thinking about how to deal with my Tormek T8. I usually turn the heat off in my stand alone shop when I'm done for the day. Even though it's insulated, on really cold evenings, the temperature can go down into the mid- 20 degrees F. I realize, to make sure my grindstone (original 250) doesn't crack, I should bring it into a heated space during the evening or when my shop heat is  turned off.

I find that I can go days only honing, not filling up the water trough and grinding. My question is, if it's been 1, 2 or 3 days since I've grinded, will the water drain from the stone thereby leaving no chance for cracking? I'm pretty sure I know the answer...better safe then sorry and bring the stone into the heat. But I thought I would see if anyone has any experience with this?

General Tormek Questions / Re: fixing a bent gouge
August 28, 2021, 10:46:04 PM
thanks for the advice Ken. I wound up setting the gouge in the 186 R as instructed (reread the instructions and video again). Although I rotated the gouge as instructed, I concentrated on the ends. As a result I was able to get back to the original shape, or pretty close to it.
As a newbie to the T-8, I do find it takes a bit to develop the right technique. However, even while still in the learning stage, my tools have never been sharper. I found that some gouges that I more or less had given up on, now are my go to ones again. It's making carving a pleasure.
I do find that getting the right angle using the marker technique a bit tricky...but still working on it.
Saw a previous post of yours and went back to a basic wood chisel to practice on. It does help. Thanks again.

I wound up using a small file and widened the mouth just a bit so now my 8/35 slides right in!

General Tormek Questions / fixing a bent gouge
August 24, 2021, 01:26:48 AM
First time using a 186R jig and I wound up with "wings" on the sides of my bent gouge...I didn't sharpen it evenly. I looked over the various videos and I know what I did wrong. My question what is the best way to repair the edge and start over? Even better, maybe someone has a video link that will show me how the repair is done?
Thanks

Hand Tool Woodworking / 186R jig
August 12, 2021, 03:19:33 PM
I have Pfeil 8L/35 bent gouge that does not fit into the 186R, by just a really, really small amount?
Has anyone done any modifications to the jig? Maybe filed it out just a very small amount to allow the gouge to fit? The last thing I want to do is ruin the jig just so this gouge will fit.
Any ideas?
Thanks
