Outstanding!! Antz that's a great story in more ways than one...when I was reading your post and got to "30 minutes for a pass" I was thinking "really"?? WTH?  Purely from an academic standpoint it makes me wonder where the fault lay in the original TT-50... Like Ken S I have a long history of complex trouble shooting (mine being air monitoring instrumentation) and the "why?" has always intrigued me. Its great its fixed but it would be interesting to "dissect" your old one with a micrometer and compare it with the new simply to see where the fault lay...stamping? assembly?  Regardless its fantastic you're back in the game!

The fact is that I'm impressed with Tormek's response to both you and to Ken's inquiry...I currently have one of the higher end Wicked Edge systems with a full gamut of different paddles but a Tormek has always impressed me. I'm in the process of budgeting for my own T-8. The fact they are so responsive and the group here is so welcoming and knowledagable (without ego I might add) only encourages me to make the full investment.

I'm in a state of constant amazement when I read this forum, so many topics already covered and discussed so thoroughly or explained so well.

The discussion begs the question (at least in my mind) where the use of an inexpensive diamond plate and plane has been used to smooth and recondition the Japanese wheel surface could not a similar set up be used in place of the grader but with different grit diamond plate (e.g. 600) to achieve different surfaces on the standard Tormek wheel?

The video answered my own thoughts about using separate honing wheels with various compounds. In fact I found both pastes online but unfortunately the 5 micron paste was out of stock.

A question? How did you apply the Jende emulsion? Was it in addition to one of these prepared wheels?

I just finished reading Dr Kraichuks (Wootz, if I may be so familiar) abbreviated (free) .pdf excerpt of his book regarding exactly this. Several of the Scanning Electron Microscope clearly show the vanadium inclusions and how they affect edge formation and why certain abrasives are needed to correctly deal with them.
