regarding "the sweet spot" with the grinding wheel

From time to time, posts have arisen about locating the sweet spot, where the grinding wheel runs the most true. I believe this can be done once, and then repeated without further trial and error work.

A recent series of posts about the leather honing wheel gave me a clue. The secret is to know where the position of the shaft, wheel and washer are in relationship to each other.

Let us begin by Identifying the position of the shaft. If we remove the leather honing wheel and mark one of the holes and nubs, we will know how the honing wheel and shaft are aligned.

Mark an arrow on the plastic outside face of the honing wheel indicating up. This should be kept pointing toward the top.

With the position of the shaft known, we start positioning the steel washer and grinding wheel. Once again, we want to draw a reference point on the steel washer. We will keep moving the steel washer around until we locate the sweet spot. At that point, draw up arrows on the grinding wheel and the steel washer. If a sharpie won't work, scribe a witness mark. (A witness mark is a scribed line of lightly punched mark to indicate how to reassemble parts.)

With the rotation points of the shaft, honing wheel, washer and grinding wheel known, reassembly after remocing the gringing wheel or honing wheel should be automatically aligned.

The Calibration on the grinding wheel end should be repeated for each wheel used.
