I registered to use the search function but I was unable to find the information I am seeking.

Have micron grades for the Tormek diamond wheels been published?

Welcome to the forum, Mr. Wizard.

I emailed your question to support (support@tormek.se). Here is their reply:

Hi Ken.

I do not know if we published this before.
But I can give you the numbers if you want.

This is how we talk about the diamond grit sizes.

•                          Diamond - Coarse
Transforms a dull edge to cutting condition. (360 mesh, 45 micron)

•                          Diamond - Fine
Use to put a great edge on slightly dull knives or tools. (600 mesh, 25 micron)

•                          Diamond - Extra Fine
Gives everything a polished and razor sharp edge. (1200 mesh, 9 micron)

Mr. Wizard,

In comparing diamond (and CBN) wheels with what Tormek marketing now calls "Original" wheels, I think we need to consider more than grit size. I have found that the 360 grit Tormek diamond wheels cut more aggressively than the 220 grit SG wheel. This applies even after the initial break in period. The diamond particles stay sharper longer.

Thank you; there is indeed much more to abrasive performance than median particle size.
