Knife Sharpening / Re: Wierd shape of blade
September 24, 2024, 03:57:17 PM
Quote from: skärparn on September 15, 2024, 07:41:39 PMHi! Been using T8 about 6 months. Often pleased with the results but I have one big problem. Some knifes, havent yet seen the exact pattern, gets a wierd shape of the blade after sharpening. Same problem both with KJ-140 and 45. Please see attached images. Can someone point out what Im doing wrong?

I think it is quite common for many kitchen knives to have this shape already. Probably due to sharpening on a honing steel (or sharpening steel) like these
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-Ko80KH3O8

Unfortunately, a lot of users use these mostly in the middle and the tip of the knife and very rarely right at the heel. Over time the knives end up like the ones in your photo.

Did you notice or check that the knives with this problem were like this before you try to sharpen them on the Tormek? You can use a straight edge or just look down carefully into the light to check.
The Tormek will not get rid of this with normal style of sharpening. You either need to spend more time on the heel as others have said and/or grind the heel part down on a grinder with coarser grit first. If you do this, be careful not to let the blade get hot.

Hi DT,
I ordered a 200mm leather wheel from Shleifjunkies and have been using it for knives ever since. I am very happy with it.
I mounted it on another machine so that I dont have to remove any wheels and it works perfectly.
Details with photos on this thread here if you are interested:

Quote from: tgbto on June 12, 2024, 05:18:03 PM...It is square (within my measurements tolerances at least) on both of my T8s...

The wheel on my T8 also seems pretty square to the USB as well as I can measure it.

Frome the picture, I am guessing it is a T4 or one of the older smaller models
#5
Hello, you said "I have trimmed the wheel twice".
Did you use the TT-50 to re-true the stone?

https://tormek.com/en/products/accessories/tt-50-truing-tool

Which model Tormek do you have?
#6
Sort of off topic of the USB measurements but....
you are saying that a worn down 250mm wheel (blackstone, say) would be OK to mount on a T4 if someone wanted. I ask as someone was wondering if Tormek had plans to make a 200mm blackstone.

New jig is officially out. (thanks to John Hancock Sr for the heads-up)

https://tormek.com/en/products/accessories/ks-123-knife-angle-setter

appears to be pretty much the same as Dutchman's review picture earlier in this thread with some very minor alterations.

Cordialement,
Danny

For the English speakers here..
Hello Xav62,
and welcome.
Most people on this forum speak in English so will to try to help you if possible. I live in the south of France. I have a Tormek T8 (which comes with the TT-50 Truing tool). This is an additional option for the T4. If you want the best precision with your machine, I would suggest you to buy one too. For me, this is essential to keep the wheel in perfect condition.
For your information, it is on sale at Marcin for 87.75 euros.
https://coutelleriemarcin.com/fr/tormek/843-tormek-tt-50-redresse-meule-1379540012248.html

I don't have experience with new T4 stones so it's difficult to say if everything is normal. If you believe that the current condition of the grinding wheel you received is defective or unusable, you can contact Tormek customer service for assistance or advice.

There are people there who speak French well.
Is it possible to show us a link to a video to see it in action?
Sincerely,
Danny

Quote from: TheSeldomSeenKid on February 21, 2024, 06:00:49 AMSometimes it is very difficult to have the knife blade align with the spine of the SVM-00 Small knife holder....
...I have designed and built a easy to use jig which aligns the blade/handle very quickly.

Personally, I don't have the jig but I am very curious to know more and understand your idea/adaptation. I  may be tempted to get one if it is useful.
Can you give us a photo / description of your idea, please?

Quote from: Andy1066 on February 18, 2024, 10:14:10 AMI would love to come across a used Tormek T4000...
Not sure where you are in the world but I noticed one for sale in France at the moment.
https://www.leboncoin.fr/equipements_pour_restaurants_hotels/2490215248.htm

equipped with a new coarse diamond wheel and two SVM knife jigs. They are asking 800 euros for it.
It is on the other side of France from me. I have no connection, BTW. I just saw it a few days ago and your post reminded me.

General Tormek Questions / Re: T8 Recommendations?
January 25, 2024, 12:01:58 PM
Quote from: Ken S on January 24, 2024, 05:17:16 PMGranted that cafeteria trays and dog food trays will work well. However, while researching the choice of a tray, we should not overlook the option of the Tormek Rubber Work Mat. Yes, it is expensive...
Ken, when I saw how expensive (80 euros!) I definitely overlooked it and went for my plastic tray (6 euros) ;D

General Tormek Questions / Re: T8 Recommendations?
January 14, 2024, 11:45:53 AM
Quote from: cb200t on January 13, 2024, 05:23:11 AMOne irritation I experienced was flooding. When I was sharpening the hand plane blades, I set the SE-77 stops up to allow the plane blade to overhang the inside edge such that 1/4" of blade material was still on the grinding wheel. This allowed water to drip onto the top of the machine, but it doesn't seem to be returning to the water tray. Rather, it was falling onto my workbench and running onto the floor. I tried propping the opposite side up 1/4", but this made no difference. The water tray was in the fully seated position. Is this normal? What have others done to avoid this?

Initially, I was skeptical that the rotating base was really necessary. After lifting the machine around to sharpen 8 chisels and a plane blade, I am no longer skeptical. In fact, I went so far as to make my own rotating base just to get through the sharpening session and then ordered the base this evening.

For the water problem, a simple (and cheap!) solution I found was a plastic gardening tray underneath the Tormek. This cost me 6 euros and is extremely effective at keeping any water spillage off the support/bench.

Tormek do propose a rubber mat for this purpose, of course.

Danny
P.S. I just put my machine stand on wheels and pull it out in use. This means going round the other side to hone, of course but is an alternative to a rotating base  ;D
I did think having the Tormek sitting on a pull out drawer mechanism would be a great idea with drawers underneath for Tormek stuff but in the end this was simplest for me.

Yes Dutchman, more or less exact ;D
Just a little correction or two:
Hello Niquedouille,
Prices are good at Marcin, delivery to France included.
Here for example, the T8 model for less than 700 euros
https://coutelleriemarcin.com/fr/tormek/1428-tormek-t-8-t8-meule-d-affutage-a-eau-220v-manuel-carnet-en-francais--1379540009286.html
I don't have any relations with them but it seems that they are a reliable company.
Personally, I bought my T8 (which was a special offer) on Dieter Schmidt's website in Germany.
I am very happy with my purchase.
I use the standard SG-250 stone with very good results on my chisels, planer blades and kitchen knives. I find it quite quick for chisels.
If I want to repair damaged parts, it's done quickly, carefully (with frequent dipping in a little water to avoid overheating it) on a small, inexpensive bench grinder then I use the Tormek for a good finish .
It's true that the Tormek is not the tool for removing material quickly.
I can't comment on long planer blades but if it's a very hard steel, a diamond wheel may be more useful...to be added later??
Sincerely,
Danny
