The base is a "extendable universal mobile base" commonly used for moving table saws, drill presses, and bandsaws around a shop. I added some angle iron on the sides.

Knife Sharpening / Movable 4-Tormek Sharpening Station
October 18, 2020, 04:42:28 AM
I call it "the rig": a 4 - machine sharpening station (for speed - no changing stones) that rolls away at a moment's notice (I use the space for other work), at the right height, stores the machines, and usable as work tables at farmers markets - for $190 CAD ( $145 USD / 120 Euros).

Retired telephone linesmen may notice the machines are colour coded using electronic resistor colour codes  ;D. It helps when storing or setting up the machines.

Knife Sharpening / Re: Why Felt is Best for Deburring

The use of felt for deburring has been around for a long time... it's not a recent discovery.  Only thing new (maybe?) is using it on the Tormek. ;)

I watched the video and learned that German "rock hard" is closer to flint hard, whereas Chinese "rock hard" is not. I also learned that using anything other than rock hard does not do as good a job on certain steels.

So I learmed a few new things. Your mileage may vary.

It was $67.22 USD.

I forgot to add, this is well suited for sharpening cleavers. Instead of having to re-set the universal support bar height on 5 machines, I now only have to calibrate two. MUCH faster.

SO what's the secret ingredient? I don't know, and really don't care. All I care is that IT WORKS. Maybe it contains dust from the corners of IKEA warehouses...

Having said that, it's interesting that some gray stuff comes out when you spray the composite wheel with water.

Good on Tormek on coming out with yet another (obviously) well-researched product!

Just sharpened and honed using KnifeGrinder's suggested protocol of SB-250 Blackstone /CW-220 composite wheel / LA-220 leather wheel with .25 micron chromium oxide.

Wow. The pictures show me replicating Vadim's BESS numbers.

I estimate it reduces sharpening time by about a third.

If you're a commercial sharpener, run, don't walk to your favourite Tormek dealer and order one. (I ordered mine from the US as the Canadian wholesaler, Big Bear Tools, doesn't have it in yet).

I paid $90 CAD for shipping and it was worth every penny.

General Tormek Questions / Low Cost Spacer
October 17, 2020, 06:34:20 PM
As most regulars here know, it's best to transport Tormeks without the grinding wheel. This means a spacer is needed to hold the drive wheel and main axle in place during transport.

A plastic CPVC plumbing connector for 3/4" pipes works. It could be a little bit shorter, but I've never had one fall off. Cost me $.71 CAD ($.54 USD / .46 Euros).

I have acquired a SG200 wheel. I am no longer in need if a wheel for my T4.

Thank you,
John

I have a 200mm SB silicone blackstone wheel for sale, but I never contacted you as I'm in Canada, and shipping across the border is just crazy right now. I just received a 12 lb (5 kg) shipment from a US sharpening supplies dealer. The expedited shipping (by air) was $90 CAD and it still took 14 days.

Knife Sharpening / Why Felt is Best for Deburring

Vadim has posted to YouTube a video on why felt is best for deburring, as well as what kind, and what density, works best:

Knife Sharpening / Organizer for Volume Knife Sharpening
September 13, 2020, 04:03:47 AM
I received a sharpening order with 11 knives (two cooks who got married!). Attaching knife jigs takes up a lot of table space. I pulled out my pliers organizers from my toolbox drawer to reduce the table sprawl.

The pictures speak for themselves; they work great! There are a few on the market; these are made by Ernst Manufacturing (www.ernstmfg.com), under "Plier Organizer". Apparently they just released a version in hi-visibility yellow! Retail is $15 USD.

I like the Ernst for a number of reasons:

1) The slots are wide enough for a SVM-45 to fit vertically.
2) Rubber feet prevents it from moving around.
3) Top of the base is also rubber coated, protecting knife edges.

I place all knives on one end; then, after a step (grinding, deburring, cleaning edge with odourless mineral spirits, etc) I then start racking them on the other end. I find that if I get interrupted (phone rings) it helps me remember which knives I have performed a certain step, and which knives still need to do that step.

I will be taking them tomorrow to my farmer's market booth.

General Tormek Questions / Re: 10” split felt wheel

Durofelt in the US has a 6" wheel, but not a 10":

They also have a new 10" felt wheel for "Tormeck" grinders:

I have their 6" knife edge felt wheel for bench grinders:

Very nice people to deal with.

...first I apply a thin layer of chainsaw oil to help bind the diamond to the wheels. I apply the chainsaw oil once to the virgin wheels
Vadim suggests a bit of parraffin Oil if the blades are starting to look a bit warn before you reach the 50
mark

I wonder if we can use the oil that comes with the Tormek leather wheel? The one in the white tube?

Side note as I can't answer the question, but I'd really like a paper wheel setup like that but can't find any slow/medium speed grinders in the UK...  If anyone knows a source apart from $150 shipping charges from US I'd be grateful...  B

Same problem in Canada. I got, I believe, the last low-speed buffer in Canada from Princess Auto. They are now out of stock. Rikon makes a low-speed buffer but no Canadian Rikon dealer sells them. I tried oredering one from the US but US Rikon dealers are only allowed to ship to the US.

I finally have a Rikon on the way - an open box unit from the US (open box, so legally not "brand new" anymore 😀).

Very Nice.  What kind of glue do you use?

Titebond 3, which is relatively water-resistant, and also considered food safe. I use a Babebot dripless glue dispenser, made by Fastcap: https://www.fastcap.com/product/glubot-family

Bought mine from Lee Valley Tools.

If anyone wants the file to modify for their own use send me a PM.
