Knife Sharpening / BESS Tester
December 30, 2019, 06:51:36 PM
Hi!!

I took time thinking of buying one PT-50B BESS Tester.

My customers don´t demand me BESS score information. I use indirect metods to calibrate the sharpening (slice of paper, cut hair on air, etc...); but I have a lot of curiosity about the BESS score I get on different knives
Does any one knows if there is an official importer of BESS tester in Europe???

I can buy it in USA, but the custom costs are very high, and I also think in possible repair or warranty...

Can anybody help me?

Thank you very much

I have three Leather wheels (LA-220)
One with original PA-70 honing compound, one with diamond compound 1Micron and one with diamond compound 0,25 micron + chromium oxide.
In all wheels, the first thing I make was applied oil.
I don´t know the difference between use oil and not use it, but the only one thing that I can tell is the honing wheels works perfectly.

One of those, has honed more than a thousand knives and still work perfectly.

In any case, I will be expectant for your BESS tests results.

Hi Jeff!

Don´t worry fo r this. Be patient
Vadim is involved in an important project and he is very busy, but he is a very responsible person.

All the questions about the app will be resolve by him. (The code is provided with the product)

In lieu of the SJ wheel, one could use another rock hard felt wheel with 5 micron diamond paste.  Something extremely close to this would be having multiple leather honing wheels with different grits of honing compound and switching out the honing wheel rather than wheels on the grinding wheel side/shaft.

Rick

Actually, I use this system in some knives (My Paper Wheels project is in stand by until after Christmas)

Is it possible to use only a Tormek T-8 and wootz FVB to follow his honing procedure for high end steel?

Yes

Do I have to use paper on a higher speed grinder to get same results?

Not necessary.

Is it possible to use paper / felt / or leather on the tormek with different the different diamond compounds to follow his procedure?

Absolutely, yes.

I have talked about diamond wheels for grinding high-end steels because these steels generally have a high vanadium and / or molybdenum content.
Sg-250 has difficulties with these metals. In this case, Diamond runs better (in my humble opinion).

About your comment on polishing, I think  that is as important as grinding. Absolutly agree.

Josh,

Do you use those wheels for honing?  I only use them for establishing the bevels (grinding) and use the Tormke SJ wheel, leather honing wheel and/or diamond pastes on paper/felt wheels for honing.  I agree that successively finer grits on the wheels you mention are very useful for refining the edges, but they still require honing in the manner I mention.

Rick

Sorry... It is a mistake. When I said "honing", I wanted to say "grinding"

I´m  absolutely agree with your comment.

I think that High Quality steels need other wheel to sharpening well.
This steels contain elements that SG-200 can not sharpening effectively.

Try to use Diamond, CBN or Silicon Carbide honing wheels.

Knife Sharpening / Re: T-8 Recommended minimum equipment?

I think (too) that you can obtain amazing results with Tormek T8 and original equipment.
The FVB is essential at this time in my work, but I think that you must practice first in order to understand the way to obtain good results, and then, when you control the process, go for FVB and Wootz´s "system".

Hi End knives and "exotics" steels, need other wheels, but before try to sharpen this kind of knives, is necessary to learn with mainstream  knives.

Only one example of results with standard equipment and FVB. Probably sharper than a lot of people need...

One thing I have heard often is that shears for cutting hair, especially those for professionals, are best sharpened with specialized machines.  I have never attempted to sharpen such tools, but I will defer to those far more experience than I (e.g., Steve Bottorff) who advocate such approaches.

The Tormek is a great all-around sharpening system, but may not be the best for such a specialized purpose.  I think this just supports the value of the Tormek system though :  it is great for an all-around system and can sharpen a wide range of tools.  But for very specialized areas, there may be a different approach needed.

Kind regards,
Rich

Your comment is absolute true.

Tormek is an excellent tool for sharpening industrial scissors or sewing shears, but the salon shears are an especial shears. Many times, this kind of shears has not bevel. This shears has a convex blade that need other kind of tool to sharpening and honning correctly.

I use the Twice As Sharp machine with one clamp speciall for convex shears.
The sharpening level with this kind of machines (Scimech or Hira-to) is absolutely higher than with Tormek with all kind of scissors/shears.

The sharpening test with shears is the cut of a wet layer of Kleenex handkerchief.  The cut must be clean to the tip.

Also, with this tools, you can reduced the sharpening time condiderably.

By the way;I have been following Bonika for a long time. She is an experimented sharpener  :D

I have no used the SVX-150 for a long time, but I remember that 98% of scissors could be sharpened using only one part of the SVX-150. Only with the longest scissors you need to use the second part of the SVX-150.
By the way, as Jan says, the springs only open the clamp; you can live with only two springs  ;D

My SVX-150 has four elastic springs ...

You need to find two of them, but for the image scissors, you only need two.

Actually, my SG-250 is in 222mm (diameter). I have lost about 6meter/min of grinding distance respect original size of 250mm.

Would be interesting a little increase of speed from now on... dont you think?

I use the ceiling light, but installed at the bottom of a shelf.
I use two led bars.

I put an image of my work place:

Curiosity, the wide of the drawer, was perfectly to the Tormek Tools Kits   ;D
