General Tormek Questions / Bevel Angle Changes
May 26, 2023, 05:21:30 PM
When sharpening chisels, I'm noticing that as I progress through the wheels 160, 400, 1000 and 1200, the bevel angle changes as the projection changes.  I understand that grinding past the point of a burr only waists metal, however the angle change still occurs.  Should I be readjusting for my original angle or just go on through my projection?  Any other advice would be appreciated.

Ken, here's the setup I was using for trailing edge grinding when I had spillage on the mat and over onto the floor.  I tried using the other USB mounts, however using your method of the TTS100 and consistent projection didn't work as the grind angle changed, as I recall.

I find that using the FVB for trailing edge grinding allows me to grind without water spilling out all over the place.  Is this OK?

offers a rough and a smooth leather wheel.

Thanks.  I saw that one.

Ken, it seems no matter how I configure USB and SE77, when I switch from grinding to stropping, I'll have to turn the chisel 180* in the SE77...is that right?  And yes, I'm using the TTS100 to set USB to wheel surface.  Also, I'm using your system for trailing edge use on both grinding wheels and leather strop.  Can I do that?  It doesn't seem to be working on the leather strop side.

If it were me, I'd put it on backwards and spin it around a few times on the shaft.  This will get a little wear on ID of the wheel.  Now, turn the wheel around and give it a try.  Some of my CBNs were a tight fit to start, but quickly loosened up a bit and now slide on nicely.

Anyone have experience with and know where I can get a 250mm leather strop for T8?

I finally tried trailing edge on a chisel and found quite a different in the edge.  There was much less chipping and a smoother operation altogether.  Problem is, it's difficult to set up the leather wheel.  I used a felt wheel with 1 micron diamond and that really got rid of the burr.  And by the way, I was able to get an 87 BESS reading without much stropping.
Ken, is there an easy way to set up the leather wheel side when the SE77 is setup for trailing edge grinding?

And another part of that knife edge...

Here's a knife edge pic after some tweeking of the camera...

Well, I purchased that Tomlov and here's a chisel edge pic.  Thoughts?

Thanks for the info and I'll do that search. I've seen pics that look close, but without great resolution and some that look molecular (exaggeration).

I've sharpened knives to 12 and 15 dps.  Would that be the same as sharpening a chisel to 25 to 30 degrees?

but don't want to spend more than $500.  I was looking at this one, as it gets in pretty close and has good resolution.  Is there one that gets closer with greater resolution and and gets even closer?

Well, I am able to get my readings down to around 100, so I guess I'll be satisfied with that for now, although I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to get them down closer to 50.
