Knife Sharpening / Re: Deburring on the stone

Quote from: RichColvin on January 21, 2023, 10:44:21 AMCheck out Dr. Vadim Kraichuk's book, Knife Deburring: Science behind the lasting razor edge.  Probably available at Amazon.

Rich, I cannot thank you enough for this recommendation. Just finished Part 1 and I'm already amazed, can't put the book down. It must be difficult for you to hear people talk so much when they know so little.

This helped me on a personal note, too. I realized I stopped doing things in my life that yielded great achievements. I sincerely thank you!!!

Yes! When I first got the Tormek, I was thinking about how to get the wheel to turn slow, then I tried it freehand like and was so surprised how easy it is!

Deburring is like drying and curing cannabis... if you screw up the last part, you waste all the time you put into it.

I can't believe no one posted here, this is the BEST deburring method. There is no way to match it with the wheel running at 90rpm.

Very cool to see the Tormek... in a propaganda video for sheeple.

Sparks are fake. They have to be smart enough to know that you would need eye protection for that job without using water.

Ya, I've had a piece of metal in my eye extracted with a needle.

General Tormek Questions / Re: Diamond and CBN wheels
January 20, 2023, 09:06:55 PM
Ya, I don't like jumping from 1200 to 4000. Super steels like S110V just doesn't buffer out like S30V... not that S30V is effortless...

I'm using the Diamond 1200. It eats steel so easily I don't use the standard stone anymore.

I hate the honing wheel so I'm stuck with this 1200 and 4000...

I deburr by moving the stone manually and holding the knife handle with the other hand. I find it too difficult to deburr by just using light pressure and quick motion.

Seems to be a working prototype, made fit for a M5 screw to tighten the pivot collar.

I love it!  .... now I need a 3d printer and a few things to learn...

On second thought, two stones on each side would obstruct your process when sharpening larger knives.

I don't like what you did here, but I'll use SJ instead from now on  : )

I hate changing stones, it interrupts my process. I've  been considering getting another Tormek ...

Perhaps I've been looking at this wrong...  :o looking at your above statement I wonder how much a "T8 Ultimate" would eat into the sales of people buying a second machine. 8)

Also, sometimes I change the stone and it wobbles. Sometime it doesn't.

Tormek had a video on this, put it on it's side and then install the stone, it should center it with no wobble.
I installed mine out of the box on it's side and no wobble :yay:

No personal experience, but I believe Knife Grinders Australia and probably others have produced add-ons to use the machines (or at least the T8) with two wheels.  But I believe their system would only work with CBN or diamond wheels which don't require water.

Yes. I've seen vids on youtube with dry "attachments", no second water tray..

LOL YEP

I imagine most people use the honing wheel. I would be using it if I didn't LOVE the Jap stone!

Well, I hate to admit it... it always wobbles, especially the Jap stone.

General Tormek Questions / Re: Jap stone, Strop wheel

The SJ is always on my Tormek. I maintain my blades with a mirror edge.

The leather honing wheel is completely useless to me. I don't understand Ken's logic in reply #3.

Always trailing edge when using the SJ!

I've owned the T4 for 2 months. Very very happy, very sharp knives, very easy, very quick.

I didn't read all the posts.

I was getting bad results with the Jap stone until I switched to trailing edge... after all, it is a polishing stone ; )

The SG stone always wears in the middle. I see it wear after doing 1 or 2 blades. I detect it by putting the aluminum backside of a sharpening stone (or any flat surface) on the wheel and shine a flashlight behind. I fix it with a 400grit diamond stone. I bought the truing tool before I thought of using a diamond stone. As long as I keep it maintained, I will never need the truing tool.

Also, I don't like the truing tool. Too loose and it doesn't produce a smooth surface (probably because the diamond bit isn't cut well). Need to hit it with the diamond stone after anyways. I put zip ties on it to tight it up, but still not something I want to use again.

I notice wobble. Up and down wobble. It is very weird... seems like sometimes I can unscrew the lock, rotate the wheel some and it goes away or isn't as bad. I hate changing stones. Considering getting a 2nd T4 for the SJ wheel.

I love the Tormek! My knives get really sharp really quick! Maintaining the mirror edge is easy. If I have to go back to using EdgePro or Haptsone, I'll forget about knives and shift focus to my guns.
