Knife Sharpening / Re: "Blank" Honing Wheel
November 13, 2024, 03:39:18 PM
Thanks so much!  I could not help but notice that Sweden is very short on large footed marsupials so I am forced to make my own.  While perhaps misguided and unnecessary, I just want to see what all the kangaroo tail hype is about.

Tormek does not sell a blank LA-220. They were kind enough to reply to my request.

That 3D printing file is a great start.  Thanks for the link.  I have someone that thinks they can tweak that design for stronger pins.  It will take some time to get this all set up but I will report back.

Knife Sharpening / "Blank" Honing Wheel
November 12, 2024, 05:21:14 PM
I want to put my own piece of leather on a LA-220 honing wheel instead of what comes from the Tormek factory.  Seems tedious and wasteful to buy a brand new one and try and remove the leather before adhering a new strip of leather.

Does anyone have any ideas on either 3D printed patterns, Tormek blank wheels, or possible used ones?  Wide open on this.  I have a CW-220 and want to try out other leathers for final honing.

Thanks in advance.

Knife Sharpening / Re: Spacer Tube Replacement

I liked the idea of the delrin one but the shipping was $45.

This aluminum one fits perfectly. Slides right on.

1" OD, 0.5" ID, 1.75" long

This vendor also sells thru Amazon but you have to buy 2 or more of them.

I remain fairly unclear on where the optimal KJ-45 jig positioning is for a standard chef's knife type blade.  In one of the early live classes on YouTube Wolfgang positions it parallel to the straight part of the blade and in a more recent Kitchen Knives edition he says to draw a line from the heel to the tip.

I have to admit I have tended to orient it parallel to the initial straight portion.  Is there a consensus on this point?

Knife Sharpening / Re: KS-123 and total angles
August 05, 2024, 04:08:32 AM
I regret I did not phrase this more matter of factly.  Something more like this; the KS-123 is designed for blades with a total angle of between 16 and 50 degrees.

I do not check the forum very often or I would have added this sooner.

For the record I do not have a leather knife.

Knife Sharpening / KS-123 and total angles
July 24, 2024, 04:50:33 PM
I want to make sure I am understanding the use of the KS-123.

The angle measured is the per side angle?  And as such you can't use it if you want to put an angle of less than 16 degrees on a knife?

Sorry for such a basic question.

1) As a practical matter what is the maximum height of the USB to the top of the machine?  Based on some of the calculators it looks unlikely it would exceed 200mm but I am looking for real world correlation.

2) What is the best practice to try and ensure the KJ-45 (or similar) is holding the blade level?  In other words so that for the most part the blade is perfectly horizontal.  Do people use a guide or jig?  Just eyeball it?
