General Tormek Questions / Re: Rust?

Thanks for the replies :)
I will just treat the areas that are affected as the steel is still plenty strong enough.

General Tormek Questions / Rust?
September 08, 2020, 08:27:12 PM
I noticed today when i turned my Supregrind 2000 around that there was rust on the steel casing by the water trough and the paint was bubbling and just broke off.
So i scraped the loose paint off but the rust seems to go behind the paint that is still pretty well adhered.
Is this common on the older Tormeks or even on the newer models.
I will treat the rusted areas and apply some paint, probably smoothrite?

General Tormek Questions / Re: Anti corrosion water?
September 08, 2020, 08:17:19 PM
Thanks for the replies folks but i don't think my question has been answered, which is how long does the AC water mix last for before it needs changing/throwing away when using a diamond wheel.
Does it last indefinitely, or just be changed weekly, monthly?
Sorry if i didn't make it clear in my opening post ;D

General Tormek Questions / Anti corrosion water?
August 28, 2020, 04:26:47 PM
Now i've got the fine diamond wheel, which i haven't used yet, i can't find any info about how often the water should be changed with the AC liquid in.
Is it best to throw away and renew or top up as i go along and then do a clean out after a longer period of time?
Also i still want to use the stone wheel i have so was thinking of getting another water trough just to use the stone wheel with save throwing the diamond AC mixed water away??

General Tormek Questions / Re: Supergrind 2000?

Thank you Rich and great info from your handbook.
Well i have taken the plunge and bought the fine diamond wheel and the SVD-186, haven't used them yet, to go with the ezylock and adjustable support bar i had already bought so think i am nearly set?

I am getting a hole appear on the stone wheel i have which i am using at the moment to mainly regrind my tools before putting the diamond wheel on to finish grind, is this normal on the stone wheels?

General Tormek Questions / Re: One Day with the T-8

I'm glad you are loving your T8 but i am having the same problem on my older Supergrind with water spillage which was right in the middle of the grinder when i reground some chisels last week, i quickly mopped it up before it ran over the edge, but didn't notice it at all until i stopped and thought i'd finished.
The water level was to the mark but thought i had put too much in??

If there is a bump, I would use a sanding sponge. Go lightly.
The problem with oil is over oiling. a little occasionally won't hurt, but, again, go lightly. If you forget to oil, no harm done.
Ken

PS If you notice black flakes while honing, you need a little oil.

Thank you Ken and yes black flakes were coming off so i will look at it today and gently sand and lightly oil :)

Thanks Ken, all done and dusted now and didn't take too long surprisingly :)
On the main honing wheel though do i have to put some more oil onto it as it feels dry, and how do i flatten it as it felt bumpy using it today?

Hand Tool Woodworking / Chisel sharpening?
August 10, 2020, 08:13:53 AM
Recently bought the Supergrind 2000 mainly for turning tools but sorted all my chisels out the other day so thought i would give them all a nice new sharp straight edge on the Tormek, but would i use the rough side of stone grader and and do all the rough work first in one go on all the chisels, then use the smoother side of the grader to finish the chisels off, or do them individually one at a time, rough then smooth, rough then smooth etc?
Hope that makes sense ???

What is the difference between the SVD185 and 186?

Thank you both for your replies, title now changed ::) i've been looking at that many threads think i'm cracking up ;)
Thanks for the info i will be changing the leather wheels round but that was how i got it so just left it like that.
Also forgot to mention that i think the stone is stuck solid to the shaft another reason for getting the Ezylock in case i do go the diamond route the stone can stay on that original shaft.
Does it make much difference to the sharpness of the tool, i know there will be no more truing up of the stone etc but it is a big layout and which one would be suitable for turning tools the fine or extra fine?

General Tormek Questions / Supergrind 2000?
August 01, 2020, 05:00:08 PM
Hi folks new member here and new to Tormek sharpening
I am a woodturner mainly and I was lucky to have picked this up last weekend as it was local and a fair price i thought.
I was told it was bought new in 2007 and has had very little use though the stone is down to just under 9" now.
I was also told that it hadn't been used in the last seven years just gathering dust under the owners bench but the motor spins the wheel and all looks good.
It came with a few jigs which i think have now been replaced by more up to date ones, such as the truing jig, the dressing stone, some paste and the two leather honing wheels and a yellow cover.
I have been looking around on here and have bought the Ezylock shaft and the adjustable support bar, but i changed the bracket that holds that around as it was clamping onto the threaded side.
Reason for buying the Ezylock is i am not sure whether to change to a diamond stone or just use the stone i have which i have trued up using the jig i had which worked well but can see the benefits of the newer version but will make do with what i have for now.
Anyway the machine cleaned up nice and does look new especially with the new support bar fitted and clean stone.
Also since i've been looking around at the older Tormeks what is the difference with the Suprergrind 2000 compared to the 2000, are they good machines have i bought wisely or not ?
I've tried to attach a picture but don't think it is loading?
