Surface rust can often be dealt with WD-40 and Scotch-Brite pads.

1. https://woodandshop.com/identify-stanley-hand-plane-age-type-study/ is quite helpfull usually
2. It depends. If you're going to make it a user, then go for it.
3. Evapo-Rust is my go-to for rust removal, it is safe to use and it does a very good job.

All in all, Stanley #1 is a very collectable hand plane, all things you do for it, will lessen its value. But, if you gonna make it a user for yourself, do whatever you need to make it functional. Thick glass plate is good base to put some 80-120 grit sandpaper on, for flattening of the sole.

You cannot match the grind, because the diameters of the wheel are different. Just put a secondary bevel on the chisel with the japanese stone, that's what I do.

Despite my initial feelings, I ordered the new jig too.

Router plane iron is also very simple to sharpen freehand on a diamond stone (or other). Veritas is a go-to router plane these days, as vintage ones have gotten a Paul Sellers increase  ;)

Just put the plane iron on the jig and then loosen both of the screws, that control the skew, the same amount, e.g. two full turns. Then screw the other one as far as it goes, you should be able to see which way the plane iron tilts.

I have to admit I'm a bit perfectionist, and always aim for accuracy, whenever I can  :)

It is ofc nice to have square edge on handplane iron, but actually square enough is enough, because handplanes usually have the lateral adjuster. If they don't have it, then a small plane setting hammer, any hammer actually, does the trick.

True words, Ken S. I was focusing on my own user habits and needs, but ofc there are the professionals too!

I might not upgrade, the old jig works well enough, not as easy to set up, but the marker method still works.

I have used the black stone with good success.

Normal USB measured from underside of the bar to the end of the threaded part = 146mm
US 430 = 200mm

Narex Richters hold their edge nicely, they are my favorites.

Here's a good video from James Wright:

Quote from: tgbto on April 08, 2025, 05:12:38 PMwouldn't the square trick help as well

I'm pretty sure that is one good point to start, though I've never used it for hand plane irons.

I'm using the technique Ken S described, have been for years with good results.

Hey, how awesome is that! Well done Rich!
