Hello Rich,

you're probably right and I'm getting into something that isn't actually a real problem. The more you "get angry", the greater the imbalance 😉
What could possibly be annoying is that you drag too far towards the handle and "wobble" into it. Of course you can also protect it with tape or stop grinding earlier.

I should probably just sharpen and mess with it less (like I used to).
Maybe I shouldn't expect too much when it comes to lateral rotation?

Thanks
Thomas

Hello,

I started grinding again after a long break.

I (again) noticed a "large" sideways imbalance. It's actually always been there, but now it "bothers" me more. In the Tormek manual page 164 it says +/- 0.5mm (total 1.0mm). The stone was not used very often and was pulled off two or three times (diameter approx. 246mm).

I also looked at Beaker's link in the topic "There is a regulation for mounting the SJ-250" and tried it.
I tilted the machine on the side of the leather wheel and put the grinding wheel horizontally on the "standing" shaft and fixed it. I also loosened the stone several times, twisted it a bit and tightened it again. The result has not changed significantly.

Now I'm not sure if this is an operator error (clamping error), inaccuracy from the stone, or a bent shaft.

I lightly "polished" the stone with the SP650 on the receiving surface, also thoroughly cleaned the nut, washer and shaft!

Experiment 1: I switched on the machine, put a permanent marker on the case and slowly approached the stone. This marked the "biggest" imbalance. I then switched off the machine, loosened the stone, twisted it a few degrees and tightened it. Repeat the test with a different colored permanent marker. I repeated this process 5 times on the inside and outside. The result was that the largest "imbalance" was always marked in the same quarter of the disc. So, in my opinion, I can rule out a "bent" shaft. It is also interesting that the largest deflection is offset from the inside to the outside by 180°.

Experiment 2: I looked for the points with the two largest and the smallest distance between the grinding wheel (inside) and the housing and measured them 4 times. The stone was re-clamped between each measurement.

Results:
1: 6.2mm / 6.3mm / 5.2mm = diff. 1.1mm
2: 6.0mm / 6.1mm / 5.4mm = diff. 0.7mm
3: 6.4mm / 6.5mm / 5.2mm = diff. 1.3mm
4: 6.1mm / 6.2mm / 5.5mm = diff. 0.7mm
Two results are OK, two less.

Maybe there is a T8 owner in the forum who lives near Innsbruck (Tyrol). I'm also in Salzburg and Wels every now and then for work. It would be cool if someone there was willing to swap the discs for a quick test and see if it made a difference.

But maybe I'm just being too picky?

Best regards

General Tormek Questions / Re: Rock Hard Felt Wheel

Hello Baker,

thanks for your info and the link (R.I.P. Vadim)!

There would also be the possibility of ordering an "Extra Hard" (approx. 0.68 - 0.72) DM 250x30mm.

Hi,

thanks for your efforts and replies!
Great, now it should be really clear to me.

Yes, if you can read and read carefully, you have a clear advantage.  :o

With best thanks

Hi,

now I've had time to try it and I'm very happy with the result.

I entered the following parameters in Duchman's Excel table "2 USB to stone distance table":
Stone SG Ø 245 / JC 12mm / JG 139 => 15° = S = 79mm
Leather Wheel Ø 220 / JC 12mm / JG 139 => 15° = S = 82mm

With my stop gauge / marking gauge I actually set 79mm for the SG Stone and 83mm (15-16°) for the Leather Wheel (see photos).
The check with the Tormek gauge WM200 actually confirmed the 15°.

But now I wanted to ask again whether the measurement on the universal support was correct?
From "above" the universal support onto the Stone / Leather Wheel. Or should I have somehow corrected the radius (6mm) of the universal support and my result was random?

If I understand that correctly, the table is an ingenious tool that can also be used perfectly on any bench grinder. "No matter" how far horizontally and vertically the universal support is from the grinder, as long as the Ø, JC, JG and S correspond to the calculation from the table, the angle should fit.

I think it's awesome that you pass on your efforts / tables so freely.
Special thanks to Ton and of course everyone else

Hi there,

hello john.jcb I've been on the forum since mid-2019. Wasn't active in the last year, but check the forum from time to time and read interesting posts.

Thank you for your quick and above all helpful replies!
Thanks for the links, now I have quite a bit of information to read!  ;D

Hi there,

while watching several Tormek grinding videos on YouTube, I came up with the following brain teaser.
Maybe this topic has already been discussed, then sorry for the repetition and I will delete the post immediately!

No idea if this is practical, but my idea would be to set the grinding angle only via the "Jig projection length X".

A prerequisite for this "variant" would be grinding wheels with the same diameter (e.g. 250mm Diamond Wheel).

And now the idea: the jig projection length X, the height of the vertical USB height and frontal vertical base height for a "medium" grinding angle (e.g. 15°) are set once with the software and checked. The settings on the Tormek should no longer be changed.

The grinding angle is then only set via the "Jig projection length X". You could build "stop gauges" for a wide variety of grinding angles and would be very fast and the angles possibly well reproducible.

No idea if this is feasible and useful?

Hopefully the google translation makes sense!

Kind regards

Hello

Ken, thanks for the tip of the dealers in Austria. Unfortunately, I was too stingy for that, but it would have saved me a lot of trouble!

As it looks, this online shop is reducing the Tormek range. There is no grinder (neither T4 nor T8) to buy. There are only a few accessories and spare parts to order. Maybe this dealer stops selling Tormek products completely.

Thus, there can be no trouble for Tormek users / buyers!

I'll watch that and if the assortment grows, I'll report my incident to Tormek Support.

Hello George,

because the online shop in my opinion was not really helpful or accommodating, I have (justified for me) made 1 point Google rating.
At the first very detailed review I have described the respective point deduction and would have come to minus 5 points rating. The next morning, the lawyer threatened me. Because I also had parts of the email traffic in the review I deleted them.

Afterwards I only mentioned the very long 14 and 24 working days delivery time, although according to order 3 to 5 days were specified. Also, the defective delivered machine had to be sent at my expense for repair. The next morning, the lawyer was again threatened.

Thereupon I deleted all text of the 1 point review. The answer from the online shop was: "You will receive a reminder from our lawyer in the next 14 days. We will delete the Google rating directly from our lawyer at Google. The costs for this will be invoiced separately. We are also examining the extent to which we can still bill you for the costs of the graceful repair. Talks have already been held with all those involved. "

;D Now a week has passed and I'm curious. The 1 point rating has not been canceled yet  ;D

Hello,

Now I would like to contact you again as promised and announce the course.

The damage report to the shipping company was unfortunately negative for me. The statement was: "Your above shipment was damaged during transport - we are very sorry. However, we can not refund the damage you have suffered.
As the postal company of the country of destination informed us, the packaging was not sufficient to protect the contents safely. According to our general terms and conditions, however, consignment contents must be packed in such a way that damage during transport is excluded. In this case, we can not assume any liability. "

The online retailer then recommended that I file a complaint with the shipping company. Since I'm not a contractor with the shipping company, can (according to my research) only the online retailer to appeal.

After further, for me unsuccessful, mail traffic I had to send the machine on own costs to the sales Germany. The repair (replacement of the engine cover) in the distribution was on goodwill.
Many thanks to the helpfulness of the sales company Germany and to the Tormek support.

Check your parcels on delivery very accurately !!!
And even better, who can should spend more money at the local dealer rather than ordering at the cheapest online shop.

Best regards

Hello,

Thank you for your answers and sorry for my late reply. I was just on vacation with the family.

Unfortunately, nothing new has emerged yet. Upon request from DHL, I have again sent photos of the damage and the packaging (Friday 24.06). Unfortunately, I have not received an answer yet  >:(

@ Ken: Thanks for pointing out, I will contact Tormek Support. The outer box was certainly not big enough. The original box fits perfectly into the outer box  :'(

@ Twisted Trees: such a law as in England would be great! I have ever had a problem with a supply of a guide rail for a circular saw. The Austrian dealer has had the defective rail pick up and immediately sent a new rail (super dealer)! Unfortunately, not all are so good and customer friendly.

@ Van: yes there was still a box over the original Tormek packaging. Unfortunately accurate and only with a bit of paper between the two upper lids. I did not look too closely at the carton during the takeover. The messenger has also put the box "right". I only noticed it when I unpacked the box in the apartment. Will not happen to me anymore!

@ Elden: I can already imagine how they deal with the packages.

I'm curious when DHL will contact me.
Will keep you updated.
Best regards

General Tormek Questions / Broken delivery T8
May 24, 2019, 09:44:02 PM
Hello,
my name is Thomas and I am from Austria / Tyrol. I have been following your forum for some time and am fascinated by the perfectionism of some people here.
I also think it's awesome that you reveal your know-how and make no secret of it! Also ingenious and thankful that the Excel table for the height settings was just made so available.

After long back and forth, I have decided for a T8 and after some delivery delay, it was delivered to me by DHL yesterday.
The slight damage to the box did not bother me much. But when I wanted to lift the machine out of the original packaging, I discovered three small broken plastic piece between machine and Styrofoam (Styrofoam was also broken). Upon closer inspection of the inside of the machine (with the lamp) I discovered the breakage. It will be with a screw of the engine cover.  >:(  :'(
I reported it to the company I ordered it from. She said that I should make a claim with DHL.
The damage report was made at DHL. I'm curious what comes out of it.

Did you ever see something like that? Must probably point to a greater impact load or what do you think?

Thank you very much
Thomas

PS. I hope the Google Translate makes sense  ;)
