I noticed that you have your knife jig quite close to the heel.I would move the jig so it's more central

I follow the procedures of Knife Grinders (Australia)

For new paper wheels I apply the diamond paste after ever 5-10 knives used on the wheels but first I apply a thin layer of chainsaw oil to help bind the diamond to the wheels. I apply the chainsaw oil once to the virgin wheels

I do this for the first 3 months then after that I re apply the diamonds after I've done around 50 knives

After a few hundred knives the wheels will get a good build of diamonds

Vadim suggests a bit of parraffin Oil if the blades are starting to look a bit warn before you reach the 50
mark
Always apply the diamond paste at the end of the day so it can settle in overnight

Always keep the slots clean, this will help cool the wheels, I use a piece of dental floss, works a treat, just don't use the same piece on your teeth....🔪

Have heard from Wootz managed to get all my apps working a treat .things have been quite slow down here in NZ with Covid 19 putting our whole country in lock down for at least a month

I am having problems with the 3 apps opening
Have just gotten a new laptop and can't open any of them. I too think I need the activation pin from knife grinders. Have emailed them about this issue but haven't heard anything in the last few weeks. Wootz must be run off his feet!
Very unusual as he is usually really prompt

Here here. Ditto from me Ken.
It's an absolute must and I'm always happy to support Wootz.
Sub 50's on the Bess would never have been possible for me without these aids and Wootz generosity in sharing his knowledge

I use both the Norton Bear and also duck tape
To protect the handles I have a 100mm (4") roll of shrink wrap packaging plastic
The shrink wrap and handle applicator was around $8 NZ Works well as if you stretch it while wrapping its tight on the knife

Nice set up Mat!

Just a note on the grinder
Most flanges on grinders that hold the wheels are just pressed steel and useless
You will need to get some solid steel ones turned up
I got a local engineer to do this for me after Wootz told me about this

Yes you are correct
Wootz supplies all the mounting information

Hi Antz
Welcome to the forum
You may be able to get a Palmgren-9682107 8" Variable speed grinder and I think Jet also does a variable speed one although the jet is more expensive
We have the same problem in New Zealand basically zip low speed grinders
I was about to import a Palmgren but managed to find a Macma 10" buffer with 2 speeds the low one being 1750 rpm. Even though it is 10" the shaft protrudes well past the motor housing (200mm) and the wheels are 50 mm higher than the housing
Wootz configured the supports to suit this machine and with his software I'm getting exceptional results
Keep us informed with what you end up doing

PayPal good for New Zealand

I also have emailed my interest and look forward to future development

Another thing with end grain boards is the glue used in them. Some resorcinol and epoxys are harder than others and could affect the edge of the knives although I would imagine this would be minimal. Quarter cut boards have a straighter grain than crown cut but I don't know if this would have any adverse effects. In cabinetmaking which was my job for the last 40+ years chisel blades always stay sharper for longer when used with the grain rather than across the grain.I also will be following Vadim's research with interest
