Thanks again Jeff

You are right - it was that source (review/comparison of the old and new truing tools) and I did think at the time that there could be other motives behind it.

Thanks for all your helpful advice. Taking everything into consideration I think I will indeed benefit from upgrading both grindstone and truing tool.

Hopefully I will let you know how it all works out - once I have them and put them into use.

Many thanks - Neville

Thanks for that Jeff

It sounds like the TT-50 will be a good move. I had read some reveiws previously that stated the ADV-50D was still a better truing tool - so had hesitated to get the TT-50. Will the SB-250 stone take much longer to true than the SG-250?

When you say that the wear on the new SB-250 is half depending on tool shape - I am constantly sharpenening (touching up not reshaping) small bowl gouges and detail gouges (HSS) - will the SB-250 form ruts and grooves half as quickly as the SG-250? Or is it really only an improvement for wider profile HSS tools such as skews, chisels, planer blades and such like?

Thanks again Neville

General Tormek Questions / SB-250 Grindstone query
April 21, 2009, 11:04:09 AM
Hello Jeff

Have you heard from Tormek Sweden yet? You were waiting an answer - regarding my previous post questions to do with the new Blackstone Silicon grindstones in the General Tormek Questions section (April 04, 2009) and the Woodturning section (April 02, 2009). I am keen to hear any advice or feedback as to whether to go the SB-250 way or not. Thanks.

I am new to this forum and have posted a question in the woodturners section about the new Blackstone Silicon wheel, and now wonder whether this section is the better one to post my questions in - so I will try again here. Also I see some have already asked similar questions about the new grindstone in this column - so I have some answers to some of my questions.

Being a fulltime woodturner I am keen to cut the downtime trueing the original SG-250 stone as it quickly gets grooves in the surface after just a few touch up sharpenings of my HSS gouges. I have the old ADV-50D trueing tool - Would the newer TT-50 do the dressing quicker? I do find the ADV-50D rather fiddly to use whereas the TT-50 looks to be a one piece jig - so maybe set up time is quicker? How much less dressing/trueing will I need to do if I buy the new SB-250 grindstone? (Check my post in the woodturning section for more details re this question) It sounds like the new grindstone would be better for my situation - but I wonder how much so?

I see from other posts that the grading of the SB-250 takes longer would that also be so when dressing it? Would be glad for any advice shared.

Wood Turning / Blackstone Silicon Stone questions
April 02, 2009, 12:28:14 PM
Hi there - First of all I am new to This Tormek forum but I think it is a great service and I am already finding it very helpful - reading the posts and replies. Thankyou for this.

I am a woodturner and Tormek 2000 owner - it is a very good system. I mostly turn bowls from NZ swamp kauri (wood that has been buried for thousands of years) which can be very abrasive on the gouges so I need to sharpen very often. I find I have a lot of down time in dressing (trueing) the stone, as it very soon has ruts form in the surface when rolling the gouge in the SVD185 jig - mostly where the nose of the gouge contacts the stone. I was considering an after market Diamond wheel but have since found out that they haven't been successful. So I was more than interested to hear of the arrival of the new Tormek Blackstone Silicon stone.

I have looked for reviews or feedback regarding the SB-250 but I guess it is early days yet for that. Have you done any comparison trials with the new SB-250 stone against the original SG-250? Or maybe you have had feedback from owners of the SB-250? How much harder is this new abrasive composition compared to the original? How often would you need to dress (not meaning grading) the stone in comparison - ie - half as many times or a quarter as many times or less? 99% of the tools I sharpen are HSS. Maybe even knowing what the composition of the wheel would help. I would be more than happy if I could cut down the time consuming dressing/trueing of the stone. It would make a very good system become even better! I just want to make certain there will be a significant improvement before I take the plunge and buy the SB-250. I will value any advice regarding this.
Thankyou - Neville
