Title: T2 vs T8
Post by: lillebror on January 31, 2023, 03:03:12 PM
My needs are mostly knifesharpening, but I want the opportunity to sharpen chisels and scissors etc. The question is whether I can buy any jigs or tools to fit on the T2 for that use.
sorry for the spelling and the grammar - I'm from Denmark  8)

There are no jigs (beyond knives and circular blades) for the T-2 that I'm aware of, so if you want to sharpen more, it'll be the T-8 or T-4.

Welcome to the forum, Lillibror.

To answer your specific question, no, the T4/T8 jigs do not fit the T2. Nor does the R2 knife jig fit the T4 or T8.

"T2 vs T8". May I suggest an alternative? I like the combination of T2 and T4.
The T2 is a specialist machine for sharpening restaurant knives. It is the product of Tormek working with groups like the Swedish Culinary Team. If I had no other choice, I could sharpen my chisels with my T2. It would work, although, it would be clumsy and outside the T2's primary design area.

Why the T4 instead of the T8? The 200 mm diameter diamond grinding wheels are interchangeable between the T4 and the T2. If, at some point, if you purchase all three (DC-200; DF-200; and DE-200), this represents a substantial investment.
Most users find the DF sufficient for their needs; however, it is convenient to be able to interchange these three wheels between the two machines.

You are asking an important question, one worthy of real thought.

Please keep us posted.

Thank you
It actually makes sense to combine the T2 and the T4 according to the wheel size. I might start up with the T4 bushcraft, and then see where it brings me.
I need to try something new instead of the boring Lansky sharpening.

You just have a plan untill . . . .
I bought a Tormek T1 and it really does the job. I'm satisfied for now.
Later I'll buy a cheap Scheppach for my tools.

Your T1 should serve you well for your knives.
As for a later less expensive for your tools, I would look for a good used T4 or T7.

Congrats on the new machine!  I haven't had a chance to play with the T1 or T2, but they look pretty neat.

FYI, Tormek is doing a live T-1 demo on Youtube tomorrow.

I have sharpened an old ceramic knife - succesfully. But now I think that the wheel has suffered from it. It has lost some effiency.

Hopefully just because of the "break-in" that the diamond wheels have.  Most start more aggressive than their rating, after a few sharpenings they break-in and settle to a finer grit.  The ceramic knife may have accelerated this.

Edit: Break in talked about a little here:  https://youtu.be/38c95D6z5D8?t=686

One thing I've noticed with ceramic is it may "clog" the wheel a bit, so you may want to check for that.

p.s. I personally consider the T-1 more of a "maintainer" than a full sharpener, so if a knife needs a lot of work, either look for another method, or plan on taking some time.

Do you know how to clean the wheel?

Small scrub brush, or some have used a "rust eraser" to freshen the wheel, for example:

I use one of those belt cleaning sticks for my CBN wheels and it works very well.  It's basically just a big gum rubber eraser.

How often would you say you have to clean your CBN/Diamond wheels? I've noticed mine have accumulated some buildup that I can rub off.

I do it routinely after every couple of sharpenings because it only takes 10-20 seconds, but I think it would be fine to do it after five or 10.
