Title: beginner questions
Post by: larsfarm on November 06, 2009, 08:39:27 PM
I just bought the TNT-708 and have a couple of beginners questions.

1) How do you secure a 3/8 spindle gouge in the SVD-185? the v-shaped support is too deep, the knob doesn't reach deep enough to even reach the gouge. My spindle gouge is 3/8" wide but a lot less deep. So the SVD-185 wont hold it.

2) How do you accurately and repeatably mount a rectangular skew chisel in the SVS-50 such that it is exactly perpendicular to the jig, the universal support and the stone? There is nothing to guide a rectangular chisel in the v-shaped holders. There's a V at the top and a V att the bottom and the chisel has a rectangular skew section.

Take the black ring off the clamping pad.  That should solve your clamping issue.  The ring is only required on a very few specialized gouges.  I would have a hard time finding my personal one!

Take a look at the video section on skews.  If you soften the corners of your rectangular skew, it will move across your tool rest more smoothly.  It will also center in the vee blocks.
