Title: Spindle gouge (fingernail vs standard)
Post by: David Dalley on February 10, 2009, 08:30:00 PM
I am new to the wood turning world as of December.  I am doing quite a bit of end to end turning, so my question is do I need to have both a standard gouge and a detail gouge.  would appreciate any input.

I use both.  I like a forged (also called "Continental") gouge with a normal grind and a milled gouge with a fingernail grind.

Do you sharpen the fingernail gouge at 30 degrees and the standard at 45?

My detail spindle gouge is sharpened at 30 degrees.  To be honest, I have no idea the bevel angle on my continental gouge other than "where I want it".  I just match the existing bevel and keep going.  I am going to guess that it is between 35 and 40 degrees.
