Title: KS-1`23 newbie question on setup
Post by: Thread Killer on December 30, 2024, 10:51:58 PM
If you have a blade with an extreme curve/bow like a skinner.  What part of the blade do you use for setting up the tool?  Do you kind of center it? Just coming out of a stroke, first time using Tormek since 2021.  I am a bit behind, I don't know how far back I should hit the archives.

Have watched em both........I have watched so many, I'm getting a Swedish accent when I talk.  I guess in the KS-123 vid they just kinda center it.  I spect the difference in length doesn't mean much.  BTW Thanks

I just sharpened a Schroeder Old Timer Sharpfinger yesterday.  I used the small knife jig (sorry, don't know the model number, it's the one you put the handle or knife body in).  I measure from where I want to insure the angle of the edge is at the desired angle typically.  That is the area of the knife that will see the most use... most of the time.

After you use the angle setter you mat want to try coloring the knife edge with marker and rotate wheel ny hand to see what is removed. This is a double check on the setting.

I ALWAYS do this, no matter how I set the angle.  On EVERY blade.  On EVERY wheel diameter change (and even between Tormek diamond wheel changes where the diameter doesn't change).

Yes, that. It is a tremendous help when it comes to gauging what the motion has to be to sharpen the tip (and heel) properly.

Agree!  In tricky cases I always Sharpie the tip and heel -- just around 1/4 - 1/2".  No need for the whole blade in my case, because I'm rarely trying to match an existing angle.
