Title: Goniostat for the Tormek
Post by: RichColvin on May 24, 2024, 09:15:47 PM
I am in the process of designing a goniostat for the Tormek, and am seeking feedback.  This jig is designed for sharpening these types of tools:

The picture below shows the parts I've designed so far.

The parts are:

These are videos of the goniostat in use.

Very cool idea. I look forward to watching it develop.
Would some of this not benefit from using the side of the wheel for a completely flat grind?

This design allows for use of the side of the grinding stone, but certain angles would not be cut using that approach.  For example, the single point cutters used on metal lathes have a cutting edge angle along with a rake angle.

Very interested in this project for small metal lathe and mill cutters and in the future, Rose engine tools.
Really like the relative simplicity of the design and integrating something that already exists through Tormek!
Any updates?

Richard,

I have a final design which is much simpler than I'd thought it would be.  It uses a Tormek SVD-110 Tool Rest.

The two T-shaped pieces are used as depth stops to ensure both wings of milling bits are equal.

Rich,
 That looks great! Even simpler!
What are your plans for this going forward?
Are you planning to sell parts and/or.stl files, or will you share files somewhere?

Richard,

I need to document everything, especially regarding the use of it.  I will post it and the STL files on the SharpeningHandbook.info web site.  Everything will be free for personal use.

May take me  1 or 2 weeks to get everything together.

Rich
