Title: Grading side of the Wheel
Post by: Spad011 on February 20, 2004, 05:57:55 PM
When flattening the backs of planes and chisels, can you use the stone grader to go to the 2000 grit?

Also, is there a chance the wheel can get dished out?  Can you use the diamond tipp attachment to re true the sides?

Thanks

From the factory, the inside of the stone is at the 220 grit and the outside has been polished to 1000.  While these surfaces won't last forever, they should last long enough to lap dozens of chisels and plane irons without ever needing further attention.  The grader can be used to resurface the sides.  There was an article in Fine Woodworking several years ago that suggested drilling another set of holes in the ADV-50D so that it could be used on the side wall of the stone.
