Title: Recommendations for diamond lapping paste in the US?
Post by: N_Kauf on July 25, 2022, 07:38:02 PM
Recently acquired some paper and felt wheels and I was hoping to get some recommendations for diamond paste.  I see Vadim would recommend THK, but that looks like it may take a month to ship.  Was hoping to get started sooner.

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, Nate.

Do an online search on "Ken Schwartz". He is the guru of diamond solutions.

CB just informed me that Ken Schwartz passed away last year. The sharpening world has lost another valuable member. The search might still help you.

My THK orders always come very fast - 7-10 days from Hong Kong to Vancouver, Canada. They overestimate the shipping time on Ebay so they dont get bad feedback for "slow shipping"

I'm using pastes from Tech Diamond Tools, which work well for me.  Price is quite reasonable relative to the competition, and available on Amazon.

You should not use diamond pastes on felt wheels, only diamond solutions in alcohol. See Vadim's video https://youtu.be/-HBpsQn7frY

Good point!  Anyone know of a source for diamond sprays in alcohol emulsion?  All of the sprays I see are water based.

And why not?  I have been using THK paste on my felt wheel for years without issue. It can be a bit messy, but works.

I scanned through that video but didn't find a reason, but I didn't listen to the whole thing.

THK came in a week.  Unfortunately the paper wheels I ordered in the US haven't even shipped yet.

Bump! I got my felt wheels and now I am on a quest to find some diamonds-in-alcohol. I see some in Australia and not much in the US.

Cool! I sent them a quote request couple hours ago. How much do they change for 480ml?
...speaking of which, half-liter is way too much for a single user. If they sell it to me, I will gladly re-package and sell it in smaller bottles :)

I got my quote back. It looks like it won't be a big savings item.
90-3AB1: Diamond Suspension, Alcohol-Based Polycrystalline, 1 Micron, 16 oz. (480 mL): $109.00
90-3AB3: Diamond Suspension, Alcohol-Based Polycrystalline, 3 Micron, 16 oz. (480 mL): $155.00
90-3AB6: Diamond Suspension, Alcohol-Based Polycrystalline, 6 Micron, 16 oz. (480 mL): $195.00

What are your experiences with THK?

Great. Fast shipping, good communications, cheap prices. I've ordered 4 times from them, I think.

THK paste is what I use and it has served well for years.  I only use 1µ but I'm still using the same small vial and not even 1/3rd into it.  Doesn't take much and if too much is used, it is wasted and comes off quickly, making even more mess.

Just chiming in—I've been using an alcohol-based diamond slurry from Hyperion lately and it's been working great on felt wheels. Clean application, consistent finish, and doesn't gunk up like some pastes I've tried before. Worth a look if you're still exploring options: https://www.hyperionmt.com/en/products/diamond-compounds/slurries-suspensions/

So, are you gentlemen finding benefit from the felt wheels?  There was a thread in which most folks claimed the felt wheels (rock hard) were making their projects duller in some cases.
I'm just curious as to what your process is and how are you measuring your results?

Hello, and welcome to the forum. I couldn't help but notice that 100% of your 2 first posts were resurrecting years-old posts to promote a commercial website. Not sure it's a good way to build up trust.

I have tried a few. I buy mine from Tech Diamond Tools.  It does a very nice job for me.  I use 3-mu on leather stropping belts and on a paper wheel.  I currently have 1mu on a leather belt as well.  Currently I have a PW with .25 mu, I will be setting up a new wheel with 1mu soon.
Make sure you true your paper wheel before applying your emulsion, they are considerably more effective when your tools aren't bouncing around on the wheel.
