Title: SVD-18x as a platform
Post by: RichColvin on November 29, 2017, 12:57:37 PM
I started this thread as a response to Ken's comments about the SVD-185/6 (#11 in https://forum.tormek.com/index.php?topic=3442.0), and also to trigger some discussion.   I think this jig has a huge number of untapped usages.

You may remember that I made a piece for the SVD-18x to sharpen fly cutter bits for my Rose Engine lathe (https://forum.tormek.com/index.php?topic=3380.msg20749#msg20749).

In thinking about the SVD-18x jig recently, I think either the carbide blade sharpener or a custom insert could also be used to sharpen rotary cutter blades (as asked by AirplaneDoc in https://forum.tormek.com/index.php?topic=3368.msg20583#msg20583).  I think a modification might be best as a tool handle might be best for rotating the blade in a consistent manner for an even grind.

Thoughts anyone?

Rich

I've had the same thought, but I don't have the jig.  I'm not sure that it would work to grind on the standard part of the wheel due to the size of the rotary blade.  You might need to grind on edge.

If you try it out, let us know how it works.

Brett,

I made an add-on to the SVD-18x jig.  The details are here :  https://forum.tormek.com/index.php?topic=3368.0.

Kind regards,
Rich

I saw that.  It looked good.

Let us know how it works when you get a chance to try it on some real blades.
