Title: which jig is best to start with? 45 or 140
Post by: flaggs on December 20, 2014, 02:12:17 AM
Hi, I've just ordered a T4; I'll start practising on my own knives - will a SVM45 jig be ok for these - they're all pretty-much non-flexible knives, or do I need a SVM140 for the larger ones? Length ranges from 100mm to 240mm

Welcome to the forum flaggs :)

As long as the knife does not flex when you sharpen, the SVM45 should will do just fine even on your longer blades.  Start with that and if later you find you need the longer jig then you can get one.

On really long knives like a machete for example, the issue is not blade flex, but the jig falls off the end of the control bar before you reach the end of the blade.  I tried it. :).

The long knife jig holds the blade in the same way, it just extends over more of the length of the blade to prevent flexing.
