Title: honing compound grit size
Post by: RyanArcher on May 14, 2005, 08:18:34 AM
Hey Jeff,
Still love my tormek after 2 years.  one question:  In the book, the honing compound is listed as 6000 grit.  however I've found that it polishes better than my 9000 grit water stone.  what is the grit size of the honing compound in microns?

I will try to find out, but there is another factor at play here, and that is surface speed.  The higher speed of the wheel compared to your hand on the stone would account for the difference in surface finish.

Torgny once told me Tormek compound contains a variety of grains of various size, the smallest down to 0.7 micron. The average effective size is 3 micron.
