Tormek T-1 and T-2 / Re: Starting over thoughts

I couldn't agree more with your comments. I have two T8's and struggle with the setup and adjustment of the support bar for proper angle alignment. Started using the T2 with a black magic marker and results were outstanding. Purchased the coarse and fine grit wheels to compliment the 600 grit supplied wheel and now use it as my go to sharpener for bulk or house knifes where I want to get a nice edge quickly.

Well said Ken, if you haven't been using your T2, honestly give it a try, you'll be impressed.

I noticed it's already been listed on another post...........no need to respond. :)

I noticed on the Tormek products page the T-8 Black, is this what's being hyped tomorrow? 50th Year anniversary edition.

CBX34,

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to send me the link. I do remember watching that segment and keyed into what they were saying. I must say the more I watch the T2 video the more I pick up. Amazing how much information there is packed into that video.

Thank you so much.

Thank you for that Ken. I thought somewhere Wootz preferred the CBN wheels because they preformed better at the temperatures where the edge of the knife contacted the grinding wheel. When he added the wheel coarse wheel (replacing the honing wheel) he recommended spraying with water to keep that contact temperature down.
After reading about your comments on the video, I watched at length and picked up some good points. The T2 was mostly in the corner never used. I'm now using the T2 for quick sharpening the neighbors knives and I must say I'm glad I've learned to properly use it. It's a gem.

Tormek T-1 and T-2 / Why no Water for T2?
February 20, 2023, 09:27:35 PM
I'm curious as the owner of 3 T-8's and a T-2 why water isn't used with the T2 wheels? I thought the purpose of water cooling on the T-8's was to keep the knife edge cool at the point of contact. Am I wrong here? Although the T2 rotates at a much slower speed there seems there would be sufficient heat buildup at the edge to affect the properties of the knife.  Am I wrong?

I've attached the drip tray model along with the protective shield I had modeled. The drip tray has a grove cut into it and the shield should fit into the groove. I just sent it out to be printed and should receive next week. Once received I'll post pictures. In meantime I've posted the zip files of each so those that want can have printed.

It occurred to me that another way to protect the honing wheel would be to wrap it in rescue tape, or another brand of self-fusing silicone tape.  If you haven't used it, it's some pretty amazing stuff.  It's stretchy and it sticks, or "fuses" to itself, forming a water-tight bond.  Once you fit it, it essentially becomes a big rubber band that can be removed and replaced on the honing wheel as needed.  Couldn't find 30ml for an exact fit, so I ordered 1.5" and will trim to fit.

3D Anvil - Issue I have isn't water getting on the honing wheel rather the water dripping down on the drive wheel when the honing wheel has been replaced with another grinding wheel using the extended shaft. The water reduces the friction between the drive wheel and it just spins without turning the grinding wheels.............after reading your post a few times I understand what your trying to do and the silicone tape makes perfect sense.  I was just a bit premature in my response. Sorry.

I'm having the drip tray 3D printing file modified to include the groove. As soon as this local ME student completes the modification I'll provide to anyone that wants it. Not sure how to post a link for the file but hopefully someone will let me know when I have the modified file.

How did you make the cover to protect the drive wheel from splashing water? Interested in a solution.

There are "Drip Trays" being made (or you can print your own if you have a 3D printer).

I found a kid on Craigslist advertising3D printing. He made it for pretty much material cost.

Congratulations on your work station. Order and cleanliness first of all.

I just folded some aluminum foil and had the water run into the lower pan. I'll get a picture of it, however, kind of embarrassed. I'll comeup with a permanent solution in the next few days.

What other hobbies do you enjoy using this shop?
Making parts for offshore fishing boat "StovePipe" and keeping filet knives sharp for boat and others who share the dock.
