General Tormek Questions / Re: Between uses
April 13, 2016, 04:40:55 AM
Thanks again for all the useful info.
Another question I have is about the strop wheel. I've added the compound to the wheel but over night it becomes dusty, seems to be drying out. Will that change the more I use it or should I have prepared the wheel in some way before adding the compound?

Thanks
Greg

General Tormek Questions / Re: Between uses

Thank you for the comments and suggestions, I'm sure I'll have additional questions. But also hope with time and use I can be an asset to others especially in regards to woodcarving gouges.

Greg

I sent a short video of the an intermediate size #5/8mm gouge slicing through a scrap piece of wood, can honestly say no tool of mine has ever made that sweet sound. 😎

Wood Carving / Re: Which jigs?????
February 13, 2016, 12:45:25 AM
Well I made the call and invested in a T7 this morning. It won't get here til  the middle of March due to the number of units being bought due to the 10% off sale.

Rich, I invested in the hand tool kit, I'll use all of the jigs except the axe jig but who knows what the future holds. My hobby is wood carving so I'm sure the knife jigs will come in harndy keeping my 10-12 carving knives sharp😎.

After talking to the resident Tormek expert at Affinity Tool (Tormek Distributer), the only jig needed for carving gouges both palm and mallet is the SVS-32 including V tools. If you have bent shaft gouges you will need the SVD-186.

I sent an email to Tormek asking about the lack of training/how to videos for woodcarving gouges that are available. I got a response from Stig in about 30 minutes. See below:

Dear  Greg,
Thank you for your mail.
We are well aware of this and will do more videos further on, for woodcarvers and also more for the hunters/outdoor enthusiast.
Tormek is a small company and everything takes a bit longer but we always try to listen and improve the system and how to show the benefits.
We started doing some films and will keep on doing this and woodcarving is a group that deserves more info.
This is one arbout a Swedish woodcarver, Carsten Nilsson

Sincerely,

Stig Reitan

Rich, thanks for the information. There are so many jigs it's easy to get confused.

Wood Carving / Which jigs?????
February 10, 2016, 07:31:14 PM
Jeff Farris and others,

What jig is best for sharpening 8-10" mallet woodcarving gouges using a T7?
It seems the Tormek is used by far more turners than carvers, wonder why?

Thanks in advance

Wood Carving / An interesting Story
January 31, 2016, 03:55:35 AM
This lil story was included in our monthly newsletter from Tannehill Woodcarvers Club near Birmingham, Al.

There were four people, Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to get done and Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry with that, because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody couldn't do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.

Wood Carving / T4 Run Time
January 30, 2016, 01:34:40 PM
It's my understanding the T4 cannot be ran continuously for more than 30 minutes. For a new user that doesn't seem very long due to the learning curve. What was your experience when you were a new user?

FYI: while corresponding with Affinity Tool Works In February Tormek will have a promotion on the T7 with 10% off. Also found out Tormek does not sell refurbished units any more, not sure whe that went into affect.

Wood Carving / Re: Probable New Tomek T4 owner

Grepper and Ken S
Thanks for the response
I'm not sure now if the machine I've talked to the guy about is the 2000 or the T3. In an additional email he mentioned he had had the machine for 10-11 years. In your opinion would either of these be worth $500 with the 6-7 jigs? Would a stone that old start to deteriorate in 10 years? He did say he thought the stone is in good shape.

Plus I'll have to make a 400 mile round trip to get it. The gentleman is worried about the stone getting damaged in shipment.

Ken he lists the AVD-50D diamond truing tool in the list plus the SP-650 stone Grader.

I've told him I'll let him know by Wednesday night if I'm getting it, any advice with the above information would be appreciated.

Thanks again

Wood Carving / Probable New Tomek T4 owner
January 25, 2016, 12:05:48 AM
I've got the opportunity to pick up a used T4 with 6-7 different jigs for a very good price. I've seriously thought about making the investment but could never pull the trigger. Being a woodcarver that will be the tools it'll be used with plus the wife's scissors as she is a very good seamstrist along with the kitchen knives. Look forward to being on here and learning from you guys and ladies.
