General Tormek Questions / Re: Foot Switch
January 18, 2024, 01:08:05 AM
What are you trying to achieve with the foot switch?  Can't you just let it run?

I have a 40mm Two Cherries carpenters chisel (https://twocherriesusa.com/product/carpenters-chisel/) and sharpen it using the SE-77 (https://tormek.com/en/products/grinding-jigs/se-77-square-edge-jig).  I don't know the limits for the SE-77, but the 40mm carpenters chisel is quite large and there is room to spare in the SE-77 jig.

The SE-77 jig works well, and I believe it would work for your chisel also.

If you go that route, consider using a 3D printed projection jig (https://sharpeninghandbook.info/indexJigs.html#ProjJigTTS100) with the TTS-100. It makes the setup of the SE-77 faster, easier, and more consistent.

Scissors Sharpening / Re: Sissors on diamond wheel
January 12, 2024, 05:04:54 AM
I sharpen scissors on my Tormek using the SVX-150 jig on the DF-250 diamond grinding wheel.  My wife has no complaints except when I take too long to get her scissors sharpened.

Dedicated USBs with collars locking the TTS-100 settings are also recommended.

General Tormek Questions / Re: Gouge angle sharping

Roger,

I'm having trouble visualizing what you are describing.  Please post some pictures so we can assist you.

Kind regards,
Rich

Quote from: Ken S on December 24, 2023, 03:04:41 PMI believe superabrasive wheels will expand the scope of the Tormek with supersteels, but that the needs of most users will continue to be well served with the SG and SB wheels combined with good technique.
I agree!

With the diamond wheels, it is key to not over fill the trough.  That helps keep the water splashing down.

The use of a drip tray (https://sharpeninghandbook.info/indexJigs.html#DripTray) helps also.

Jean-Baptiste,

If you are sharpening a lot of HSS tools like used in woodturning, then the SB-250 is definitely needed.   If the majority of your tools are not HSS or other similarly hard metals, then the SG-250 is a better choice.  I found that re-grading the SB grindstone is more difficult than re-grading the SG grindstone.

Quote from: 3D Anvil on December 13, 2023, 03:08:57 PMThe SVM jig is much better if you want to pivot a knife with a big belly, assuming you have some kind of after market pivot add-on.  This could be addressed in an updated KJ-45 with an adjustable stop, which I would really love to see.
As Ken notes, the SVM and the KJ jigs really need to be viewed separately.

With the SVM jigs, the SVM's stop is adjusted so that, when affixed to the knife's blade, the projection stays at 139mm (or is it 129mm?  Can't remember as I use a jig for this too.)  And the USB's height is fixed for a given angle.  The height of the USB can be set easily using the HanJig (https://sharpeninghandbook.info/indexJigs.html#HanJig) or very accurately using one of the calculators like CB's or TormekCalc.

With the KJ jigs, the projection changes based on the blade's width, and the sharpener needs to adjust the height of the USB.  The Knife Angle Setter from Perra (https://sharpeninghandbook.info/indexJigs.html#KnifeAngleSetter) makes this quite easy.

Neither is harder or easier than the other, just different.

Yeah, I caught the note about small bits also.  Interesting.

Additionally, well water like we have has a very high iron content so there will be more accumulation of iron in the water and on the grinding wheel.

Wood Carving / Tormek will get chisels SHARP
November 22, 2023, 08:40:45 PM
I recently re-sharpened my Two Cherries 40mm carpenters chisel after a project.  My process was:

  • Clean up the edge using the SG-250 grindstone, graded to a rough grit
  • Sharpen the edge using the same SG-250 grindstone, graded to a very fine grit
  • Hone on the leather wheel
  • Hone on a paper wheel using red rouge
  • Hone on a paper wheel using jeweler's rouge

When I grabbed one of them today to use it again, I slipped and it cut me pretty badly.  The picture below shows how easily it was to splatter blood (yes, it is my own blood).

So, two take-always:

  • The Tormek is more than adequate for sharpening chisels
  • Be careful handling those sharpened tools.

General Tormek Questions / Re: "Make it our custom"

Ken,

I like this.  It also seems to me like a pre-flight checklist.  This is a great way to be ready you are setup for success.

General Tormek Questions / Re: Wood chipper blades
October 26, 2023, 01:15:55 PM
They are probably at a 40-45° grind angle, and need a good, clean edge (not razor sharp).  My first thought is that these should be sharpened by hand, running against the Tormek grindstone.
