Messages - That Sharpening Guy

#1
I have a mobile sharpening business and sharpen for both residential and commercial customers. I strictly use my Tormek to sharpen all knives with the exception of using a belt sander to fix broken tips and to remove nicks from knives. Both my residential and commercial customers love that their knives are being sharpened on a water stone system and not a grinder. I do not use the Tormek leather wheel because it is to slow when doing large quantities. I use a low-speed bench grinder with an 8" leather wheel with green honing compound and also sharpen freehand due to time. I use the Wolf Twice as Sharp for all scissors.

Jimmy, I had asked a similar question a while back so maybe some of the answers I was given may help.

Good luck!!

Is it possible to thin a knife blade on the Tormek? If it is possible are there any videos on how to properly do it?

Thanks!!

I will let you know how it works out Ken.

Why should you not transport a Tormek with the stone on? I have been doing that with my mobile business for quite awhile. I have it setting flat in the back of my van where it will not fall or rock back and forth. Now I am concerned what damage I could  possibly cause.

Before I buy it how can I tell if the wheel is rusted to the shaft? Should I ask him to see if he can remove the stone before I drive and hour to look at it?

Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks!! I currently have the T-7 and I need a new stone and stone grader. I have always wanted a backup in case mine needs to go into the shop. I found this for sale for $275 and figured I could not pass it up. Older gentleman moving into smaller house and just never used it so it has been sitting. The stone fits my T-7 and comes with the grading stone. So I get what I need and and a Tormek almost for free. Win Win!!

I have searched all over YouTube for videos on how to sharpen single bevel Japanese knives on the Tormek but am not able to find any. Does anyone have any videos or could suggest any videos on how to do this on the Tormek?

Thank you so very much in advance!!

Knife Sharpening / Re: using the SB-250 and SG-250

Thank you for the the advice. I just went with the SG-250 stone. When I am financially able I may purchase the SB-250 also for when I really need it.

Thank you Jan I really like that idea and will check into getting some made. Humorous is when your wrapping a knife in the comics section of the newspaper and you get distracted and start to read them because your ADD kicks in

It is time for me to buy a new stone. I am wanting to get the SB-250 because I sharpen a variety of knives both hard steel and and regular stainless.

Do you notice a big difference on how quickly you get a bur using the SB-250 compared to the SG-250?

Will the SB-250 clog up when sharpening soft metals?

Will it last longer than the original stone?

I do not use jigs only freehand when sharpening knives.

Thanks!!

This is another option that you may like because it cost nothing and customers really seem to like it because you are recycling. I do this at the farmers market or even if customers bring knives to me for sharpening elsewhere. In my opinion I feel it is safer because the knife will not slip out  like it can with a paper sleeve. It only takes a second to wrap a knife and one sheet of newspaper will do up to a 10" knife. The main question I get asked is do I drink a lot of wine because I have a 2 gallon bag full of these corks lol.  You never have to worry about running out of corks because the customers love to save them for you.

I cut the corks in to quarters and put the cork on the tip of the knife so it will not poke through. This also helps keep it from slipping out of the paper.
