Knife Sharpening / Alternative FVB
November 07, 2019, 12:27:48 PM
I hope to introduce an alternative Frontal vertical base.

This solution was introduced at a small knife forum in Korea.

Surprisingly, this is the accessory of a JET wet sharpener.

Knife Sharpening / Replacement of knob

Support and knob are interfering. Is there any solution?

Tormek leather wheel doesn't polish the high abrasive resistant steel like CPM-S110V.

How about using alcohol or water base diamond spray on leather wheel?(PA-70 + Diamond spray)

What micron do you think would be good for?

Knife Sharpening / The O-ring of knife jig
June 24, 2019, 05:31:52 AM
The O-ring of knife jig is broken. I think it's because 'dry'.

So I applied synthetic grease to it then wiped it.

I applied 5 micron diamond paste on the Tormek leather wheel.(Tormek paste is 3 micron)

But It doesn't polish the edge. What did I do wrong?

In this video, Korin use a large water cooled wheel for first step of repair/sharpening then sharpen it on the benchstone. Very impressive!

Is anybody here who uses Tormek like this?

Recently, I practice freehand benchstone sharpening. But I still need Tormek and Belt grinder because first step of sharpening takes the most time.

Knife Sharpening / Wearing the adjustable stop
April 01, 2019, 02:57:11 AM
I sometimes have difficulty keeping the adjustable stop of SVM-45 parallel to the support. Especially when grinding near the tip.

Of course, I pushed hard it with my thumb.

Is it because the stop is worn?

Is there a good solution to keep the stop parallel?

Knife Sharpening / Diamond honing wheel
March 08, 2019, 10:43:39 PM
https://youtu.be/kO1dyGxa3Rg

Yesterday, I applied Diamond paste to Tormek leather wheels and tested it for sharpening the high-vanadium steel knives.

CBN 400 grit >>> CBN 1000 grit >>> Diamond honing wheel 5 micron >>> Diamond honing wheel 0.5 micron

But the Diamond honing wheel didn't remove burr completely. So I had to use the honing wheel(PA-70) after using the Diamond honing wheel(0.5 micron).

PA-70 is real burr killer.

I think it's better to remove the burr first using the honing wheel(PA-70) before using the Diamond honing wheel.

General Tormek Questions / Price of ACC-150
March 04, 2019, 04:42:24 AM
With my 10"(254.2mm) CBN wheel, T-8 needs 350~500ml of water and 13~19ml of ACC-150.

The amazon price of ACC-150(300ml) is 49.95 USD.

13ml/300ml = 23.08  >>> 23.08 / 49.95 USD = 2.16 USD
19ml/300ml= 15.79   >>> 15.79 / 49.95 USD = 3.16 USD

So, we have to pay 2~3 USD each time.

General Tormek Questions / Rust on the washer
February 14, 2019, 10:43:41 AM
A few weeks ago, I found thin rust on the washer. I've never seen it before.

The reason seems to be that the SG-250 was putted to the machine with water on the washer after using the CBN wheel.

The rust were not thick and could easily be removed with a Flitz polisher(check the photo).

So be careful. You have to wipe the washer before putting the wheel on the machine or always keep the wheel removed from the machine.

Good luck.

I want to make strop with the same leather as the honing wheel. Do you know what kind of leather is it?

General Tormek Questions / Diamond honing compound
January 30, 2019, 09:10:24 AM
Tormek made wheels with aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, Japanese waterstone and diamonds.

But what about the compound? Aluminum oxide only. I hope Tormek will make a diamond compound.

Nowadays many knives made of very hard steel. So I think we need diamond compound.

Knife Sharpening / We need the Bevel protractor
January 17, 2019, 08:09:06 AM
When setting the angle of kitchen knife with AngleMaster, everyone assume the bevel is 0 degree.

But it's not.

A few days ago, I got a bevel protractor and checked it.

Chef knives: 1.5 dps
Pairing knife: 2.3 dps

The problem is that we can't measure this acute bevel angle with AngleMaster.

Do you want to set the edge angle precisely with AngleMaster? You need a bevel protractor.

I believe Tormek is world best 'small' vertical wheel sharpener. I've used T8 for 2 years. It's high quality and robust machine.

Yes, I love it. But now I hope new type of Tormek. Because freehand knife sharpening is very difficult with vertical wheel sharpener like Tormek.

Jig? The SVM-45 is well made but isn't perfect.(self centering, curved edge...)

You can see the horizontal wheel sharpener in attached photo. What if the new Tormek is made like this?

Knife Sharpening / Extremely hard steel - CPM REX 121
November 11, 2018, 11:15:05 AM
Do you know what is the most difficult steel for sharpening? Maybe this is it.

http://zknives.com/knives/steels/cpm_rex_121.shtml

My customer said it's even much harder than ZDP-189 and asked me if I could sharpen this steel. I think my CBN wheels can grind it. But I don't think my leather honing wheel & PA-70 can hone it.

Has anyone sharpened this steel with Tormek? Do you think plenty of PA-70 can be solution?
