Knife Sharpening / Maximize edge retention
October 30, 2017, 10:22:10 AM
What people want most about kitchen knives is edge retention. What do you think is a way to achieve this using Tormek?

There are two cases here.

1. Management by honing steel
2. Use without management

I'm sharpening to 30 degrees (15 + 15) with Tormek, but I couldn't hear that edge retention is good. Should I lower the angle?

After the compound is piled on the leather wheel, it's eventually peeled as shown in the picture. The peeled piece is like a bark. I usually sharpen the knife and apply a little pressure to the leather wheel. How can I avoid this problem?

General Tormek Questions / Rust on the inside of US

I have two T-8 and all with the same problem.

One was confirmed during use and the other was confirmed when it was new.

Does your US have the same problem?

Do you think the PA-70 can't make a sharp enough edge for knife sharpening business?

I wonder why you chose a finer abrasive.(Chromium oxide, Diamond spray....)

I've heard that the leather wheels are good for warming them before use because they don't work well at sub-zero temperatures. Is there a good way to warm leather wheels?

Jeff Farris puts the compound on leather wheels very easily.

I tried the same way but failed. The thread on the tube scratches the leather wheel and the compound has accumulated on the thread.

What is your preferred method?

I believe Tormek is a great sharpener.

But even though I think and think about it, there seems to be a definite limit to making the blade thin with Tormek.

A seriously worn knife must be made thin, and some people require thinning it every time I sharpen.

How do you solve this problem?

I think there is only way to use Belt sander for quick work.

Knife Sharpening / Another way to honing with Tormek
October 23, 2017, 04:41:43 AM
I don't like the PA-70. because.....

1. The powder falls.
2. When touching the surface, the black compound is on my hand.
3. The residue must be wiped off the blade.

So I am looking for something else to use on the Tormek leather wheel. For example, Bark river CBN Emulsion, DMT Diamond spray, etc ...

What do you think is the best abrasive that can be applied to it?

Knife Sharpening / Finishing with SJ-250
October 22, 2017, 04:55:01 AM
Tormek said......"Since the surface left by the Japanese Waterstone is so fine, we do not recommend honing afterwards on the leather honing wheel."(https://www.tormek.com/international/en/accessories/grindstones/sj-250-tormek-japanese-waterstone/)

But in my experience, the SJ-250 finished knife is not sharp enough. There is a big difference compared to the honing wheel.

Is your experience the same?

Do you feel that the results of Tormek's Honing wheel (PA-70) are sharper than paper wheels and buffing wheels?

Does the Chrome oxide compound on page 27 mean the PA-70?
