I have two buffers. First one has a rock hard felt wheel with green rouge, and a .5 micron diamond paste papaer wheel. Second buffer has 5 and 2.5 micron diamonds on two paper wheels.

While dry grinding with CBN wheels works very well with higher speed grinding, in my opinion, dry grinding with a Tormek defeats one of the main advantages of the Tormek, namely dust free grinding.
Yes, CBN wheels do grind cooler than conventional grinding wheels; however, dry grinding still produces dust.

Food for thought.

Ken

Ken, I agree. I now have a dry CBN grinder (for speed) and dust is a concern. I'm using a Festool Midi vacuum as a dust collection system. Problem is, to maximize particle collection, I have to run the wheel away from me and towards the ABS plumbing intakes. However, the resultant burr seems to be harder to remove than if I run the wheels towards me (as on Tormeks). So at Farmers markets I run the wheels towards me, relying on any crosswind and my Trend Airshield Pro helmet. The last picture shows how much the Airshield has filtered in just two months.

Tormeks, with their water baths, is a simple, cheaper, and elegant solution to airborne particles. It is simply a very well thought out machine!

Ah, missed that.

Tape thicker than blue painter's tape helps take up the space created by the angle in the blade spine, and so clamps blades tighter. Vadim has a video where he has to put on more than one layer to compensate for very steep spine angles.

My THK orders always come very fast - 7-10 days from Hong Kong to Vancouver, Canada. They overestimate the shipping time on Ebay so they dont get bad feedback for "slow shipping"

Interesting. Are you running a Tormek T-8 off of that power supply?

No,I don't use a Tormek anymore for my farmers market setup.

Vadim's research shows rock hard felt wheels and leather wheels deburr better than sharpening stones. My BESS sharpness tester often shows a HUGE increase in sharpness after stropping on a kangaroo strop.

Barbers for many years deburred on a leather strop. I suggest you give deburring a try on the Tormek leather wheel. There's a good reason why it's part of the Tormek package.

With the price of gas / diesel these days it might be cheaper to have a battery powered inverter? Mine is powered with a 48 volt x 14 Amp-Hour electric bike battery (672 Watt-Hours capacity). I average 130 Watt-hours usage at a four-hour long farmers' market. To achieve that, most of my equipment have brushless motors with variable frequency drives.

I also machined a calibration block 38mm high. Placing it between my reference surface and under the Tormek guide bar (12 mm), the height to the top of the bar is 50 mm. I then zero the DRO. I then simply subtract 50mm off the DRO readings.

On a T7, the DRO readout just fits between the wheel and the T7 without rubbing. It doesn't move because there is a magnet built into the back of the DRO readout. iGaging sells two DRO versions, "Absolute" and "EZ View DRO Plus". I used the cheaper EZ View version (http://igaging.com/ez%20view%20dro%20digital%20scale.html). Accuracy is .06mm, which is good enough for deburring!

This was a trial so I used aluminum. For the next version I will probably use W-1 steel.

The DRO bottom scale is mounted on a drawer slide so the FVB can be pulled out to the cleaver position. (The orange tape is a visual reminder).

First, the aluminum block is fastened to the FVB's XB-100 with two machine bolts. The top face is then machined flat with the top of this FVB. This becomes the reference surface for height measurements. I found some older XB-100s to have a rough edge (from casting?). The bottom is used to mount the top of the DRO scale.

The DRO reader (the black rectangular block) is mounted on the second XB-100. I had to machine only about .5mm off the XB-100 for a snug fit.

I dedicate one of my T7s for deburring with a 250mm felt wheel and a Frontal Vertical Base. A couple of months ago I built a DRO to read the FVB bar height. This allows me to quickly set the deburring height for most knives (+ 2 degree), for Global (15 + 1.6 = 16.6 degrees), for c!eavers, etc.

Parts List

IGaging DRO $50 CAD
Tormek XB-100 base $40 CAD
Drawer slide $10 CAD
1.5" x .75" aluminum bar stock

I use 3M No Residue duct tape, fairly water resistant so can be reused many times. No residue to clean off saves time! In fact, I need to buy my second roll today.

What is your intention to use paper wheels on a grinder? A Tormek with adequate wheels gives great results.

Regards,
Drilon
Main advantage of paper wheels is speed.

See Vadim's video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIGhif76OCw

It's on YouTube, but is "private". Ifyou seach YT it wouldn't come up.
