sharpening a broad hatchet

Hi,

I'm a pretty new Tormek T7 user.  I have a customer who wants his broad hatchet sharpened; it's a right handed hatchet, with the bevel on the right of the head and the left side is completely flat.  I plan to use the axe jig (head is about 6.25 inches), and figured I should do this like a chisel...I've used the side of the wheel to do the flat back of a chisel, but can I do that with something as large as an axe head?  I found a picture online of a hatchet that looks pretty much like the one I have to sharpen, it is here:

Any and all suggestions on sharpening the bevelled edge and doing the flat side are most appreciated!

In the pictures you've posted, you'll notice that the bevel of the tool is somewhat curved, rather than a hardline bevel. The soft bevel assists the edge into the cut on the swing.  The axe jig cannot produce the convex bevel.  You need to do that freehand, with the stone turning away from the edge, making side to side passes across the stone, altering the angle of the tool with every other pass or so, working up to the edge.

Unless the flat side of the tool is badly pitted, I would not grind on it at all.  Just use the leather strop to remove the burr once the bevel side is properly ground.
