The Swiss Army Knife has been a staple of the EDC and I myself carry one. After several attempts at using jigs I now get great results freehand. The main issue with the knife is that the steel is not particularly hard and quickly blunts. I did see recently that Victorinox announced that they would be using harder steels in their knives. It seems to me that they have stepped up to the mark with this one!

Very nice indeed

Surely you mean 60 HRC ^^ Which is still a huge step up from standard SAKs.

Yes that one

I understand Dutchman's thinking on this knife.I recently spent $50US for a SAK Fieldmaster. It was one of my most expensive knives andthe decision was only made after much thought.

I am not being critical of those of us who value fine knives. For many years my favorite camera was my Leica M3 which cost more than several supersteel knives when my fifteen year old Pentax would have served my needs. We all have splurges and practical moments.

Fortunately, there is welcoming room on this forum for both the Every Day Carry crowd and those who value supersteel and more elegant components.

I saw a documentary about Victorinox where they mentioned that they were going to make specialty blades with harder steels.

Which would be welcome, as they state that their current standard for knife steel is 52 HRC. This is quite close to what we use to call "Fer à ferrer les ânes" (Donkey shoeing iron ?) in my material engineering class.

It looks like the knife will retain its sharpness well and is likely very corrosion resistant. These two properties mean the knife will be hard to sharpen. This is okay if you have access to a shop with a Tormek machine, but not if you're out on the battlefield.  :)

Good point, Herman. a couple suggestions Plan ahead by making sure your knife is always sharp and honed before going into battle and, whenever practical bring a pocket diamond stone with you.
