Upgrade old tormek with US-103

Hi,

I have an older tormek that I got from my father. I was wondering if it is possible/feasible to upgrade it with the US-103 vertical support so I can use the truing-tool TT-50 and the SE-77 jig.

I just don't get how mount the US-103 to this model, sure I can just drill a new hole in the chassi but I still need some kind of mounting system in order to take advantage of the micro adjustement.
As you can see in the picture, the old vertical support only has one leg and it's very much in a fix position, it's held tight by two nuts.

EDIT: mixed up horizontal with vertical, fixed now

Ivar,

I believe the XB-100 base (https://www.tormek.com/usa/en/spare-parts/other-spare-parts-and-upgrades/xb-100-horizontal-base/ ) needs to be added to your machine to accommodate that.

You should send a note to support at Tormek and ask them.

Kind regards,
Rich

I messed up and wrote horizontal, I meant vertical, fixed it now in the original post.

The xb-100 would only partially solve the problem, that gives me a way to mount the US-103 in a horizontal position, maybe I can find a sturdy 90 degree bracket...

Welcome to the forum, Ivar.

You have inherited a very nice old Tormek. In ten years of active involvement, your post is the first I have read of this model.

I agree with Rich about the importance of emailing support (support@tormek.se). I have worked with support often. I have always found support very helpful. Located at the Tormek factory in Sweden, support has unmatched resources and experience. There is no charge for the service.

Please keep us posted.

You might research "front vertical base" in this forum for some ideas... here's a thread with some info:

Can you show/post a photo of the back side of your unit?  It might be possible to mount the XB-100 on the vertical face of the back side.  This would avoid drilling holes in the top of the machine case.  No telling what is down inside the case that the USB posts might interfere with.

Another option would be to mount the XB-100 to the side of a block, metal preferably (aluminum would be fine) which could be bolted to the top surface.  It appears that could crowd/interfere with the ON/OFF switch, but it is something to look at.

Quality is like buying oats.  If you want nice, clean, fresh oats, you must pay a fair price. However, if you can be satisfied with oats that have already been through the horse, that comes at a lower price.

Ivar, if you like simple zero cost solutions you can use a wooden block with two holes for USB legs and two threaded inserts for the USB locking screws.

Ivar,

I received this from a friend at Tormek:

"There is a kit of the vertical sleeves being sold at Clas Ohlson, a chain of stores in Norway and Sweden,  with a description how to mount them."

I hope this helps.

I bought this kit last year, but it is not available from Clas Ohlson anymore

In Norway the sleeves are available from Cial:
