Japanese bent gouge problems keeping square

On a recent trip to Japan I purchased a Japanese bent gouge for carving. When I tried putting the edge on it, I have been unable to keep the edge square using the SVd-185. One of the problems is getting the tool into the jig. The shank is tapered so I filed a flat spot on to it. It seemed fine but the end results say something is wrong. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Where do you have the knuckle adjusted?  What sort of protrusion are you using?

There is about 10 cm protruding and the knuckle is adjusted on a bit over 2

Pull your protrusion back so that about 65mm is protruding from the front of the jig and adjust the jig to slightly under 2.  Depending on the amount of curve in the shank this should be about right.
